Social media is buzzing with reports that Shazam! star Zachary Levi allegedly believed his role would make him as famous as Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.
On October 9, 2024, a Hollywood Reporter insider said Levi, who has gained attention for his outspoken support of Trump, thought his performance would be his "ticket to becoming like The Rock or Chris Evans."
The revelation, however, has prompted an outpouring of reactions from fans and critics alike across social media with many users on X suggesting Levi's is being "arrogant" in thinking that he could be The Rock or someone else —
"Too much ego," one wrote on X.
"I can’t imagine the arrogance required to think you’re role is so killer you’re gonna become the Rock," another on X.
Moreover, many users on X suggested that if Zachary Levi had focused on embracing confidence in his roles and movies rather than aspiring to be something else, he might have been able to salvage more of his career trajectory.
"Levi made the error of pursuing the right wing grift after his career was already dead. If he’d trusted the Shazam 2 box office flop predictions instead of coping he might’ve been able to salvage something," one wrote.
"He thought he would become who? You need to create your own identity, not try to be someone else (or as good as X, Y, Z)," another commented.
"Poor thing. He'll have to live with the fact that he's Zachary Levi," another netizen on X.
On the other hand, many users on X defended Zachary Levi, expressing that he will always be remembered as 'Chuck,' about his television series. Additionally, many indicated that they enjoyed Shazam! and appreciated his performance in the role.
"it's okay you'll always be our Chuck at the end of the day," one on X.
"Maybe it would have done this if the DCEU wasn't a complete mess," another commented.
"I liked the Shazam films," one more on X.
"I enjoyed the Shazam movie actually. But affinity and popularity sometimes can't be controlled," a netizen commented.
"To be fair, Shazam did better than black Adam," one user wrote.
At this time Zachary Levi has not reflected on the reactions or claims.
Zachary Levi believed Shazam! would propel him to rock-level fame
On Thursday, inside sources with The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Zachary Levi was thrilled when he was cast as Shazam!, describing it as a dream come true. However, when this level of recognition reportedly did not materialize, he grew increasingly bitter —
"When he was cast as Shazam, it was literally his dream. He thought this was his ticket to being The Rock or Chris Evans. But it didn’t happen for him, and he’s bitter about that," insider claims.
Furthermore, the publication reports that the Shazam! star no longer resides in Los Angeles, having instead relocated to a cattle ranch in deeply conservative Texas, where he is focusing on various projects.
These include the 2021 Christian-themed film American Underdog and the upcoming The Unbreakable Boy, set to be released in February 2025, as per Hollywood Reporter.
According to Box Office Mojo, Shazam! grossed $140.5 million in the United States and Canada, with an additional $225.6 million in other territories, bringing its worldwide total to $368 million.
Additionally, in late September 2024, the actor made headlines by publicly endorsing former President Donald Trump during a rally, declaring his support. While many perceived this endorsement as career suicide, Whoopi Goldberg dismissed these claims, suggesting that Hollywood has become increasingly liberal. However, neither Levi nor Trump has commented on these reactions.
