With Kraven the Hunter finally premiering this week, it has been reportedly confirmed that Sony's often-disastrous Spider-Man spinoff universe, which has featured numerous villains from the comics, is coming to an end. This marks the end of the saga that began with Venom in 2018.
While this development may seem tragic for fans of the universe, the reaction has not been overwhelmingly sad, primarily due to the lack of success of these films. Although Venom and its sequels have seen significant fanfare, other movies, including Morbius and Madame Web, failed both critically and commercially.
This lack of success has prompted fans around the globe to come up with hilarious responses to the death of Sony's Spider-Man Universe, also referred to as the SUMC.
X user @theBurk3nator perhaps captured this sentiment perfectly by stating:
"Was it ever really alive?"
Other fans chimed in with their own set of responses, most of which are mocking this "end of an era."
"Madame web should been final...they don't know how power she is😭🙆🏻 totally destroyed spider universe.... Marvel please buy Spiderman rights," a fan wrote.
"Oh no, RIP to the Sony Spider-Man Villain Cinematic Universe—or, as I like to call it, "The Sinister Six That Never Was." Looks like Kraven the Hunter is the last hurrah. But seriously, what even is SUMC? Some Unlucky Movie Concepts? Suffering Unending Mediocre Cinematic universe? jk," another fan said.
"Sometimes you just try to juice the lemon a little bit too much." another fan added.
Overall, it seems that Sony's Spider-Man Universe has not captivated fans to the point of them being devastated. With Kraven the Hunter, the franchise may wrap up well. However, if this movie fails to live up to the expectations, it could mean a tragic end to Sony's ambitious attempt.
Sony's ambitious Spider-Man spinoff universe meets an unenthusiastic end
What began as an ambitious project in 2018 with Venom, one of Sony's better-remembered superhero movies, has slowly faded with the addition of other villains like Morbius. Not only were these movies trashed by critics, but they also failed to perform as well as other contemporary superhero movies.
With audience fatigue setting in over the last five years, evident even in the best of Marvel movies, which have struggled to recreate their earlier magic, it has become even harder for other spinoff universes like Sony's Spider-Man universe to survive.
According to the reports by The Wrap, Sony's adaptation of Marvel characters is set to pause following the release of Kraven the Hunter, which had to go through a long process to reach its final stage.
Venom 3 was already meant to be the Last Dance, but with this report, the entire universe may finally come to a halt, and in a manner that cannot be considered glorious by any means.
Sony is officially yet to confirm the fate of its Spider-Man universe, but we hope to get the news soon. Meanwhile, Kraven the Hunter is set to hit the theaters on December 13, 2024.
