While Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse was initially scheduled to release in March 2024, Sony indefinitely delayed the film with no release date. With it having been more than a year since Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse left fans on a huge cliffhanger, there haven't been any further updates on the sequel.
However, that was until September 9, 2024, when Jeff Sneider reported that Sony had scrapped most of the script for Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse due to "creative reasons," and the film would not be released before 2027. While this news did leave many fans shocked, the film's composer, Daniel Pemberton, was quick to debunk those rumors and put out a statement of his own.
"Don’t really ever want to weigh in on this sort of stuff BUT would you ever believe there could sometimes be stuff on the internet that might not always be particularly accurate? Hmmmm…," said Daniel Pemberton via X.
Daniel Pemberton so far has worked on Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse as well, and is set to score the upcoming Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse too. However, when that film will come out remains a mystery.
What can fans expect from Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse?
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse focuses on Miles Morales fighting against fate to save his dad from the Spot. However, when Miguel O'Hara challenges his ideology, he escapes from Spider-Society and returns home—only to realize he has ended up on a completely different Earth where Spider-Man doesn't exist and his father is already dead.
With his uncle Aaron alive, Miles is soon taken in by Earth's Prowler, who reveals himself to be an alternate version of Miles. At the same time, Gwen assembles her own group to save Miles wherever he might be. With much at stake, the film ends teasing a third act that will be the culmination of everything so far.
Fans can expect Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse to pick up immediately, with Miles fighting the alternate version of himself while also trying to make it back to his Earth. At the same time, fans can expect Gwen to lead her mission of trying to save Miles. With it also being "Beyond" the Spider-Verse, fans can expect more surprises in store.
Beyond the Spider-Verse to conclude Miles' story
With Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse being the third film in the trilogy, it will also be concluding Miles Morales' story in this universe. Talking to Entertainment Tonight on June 5, 2023, writer Chris Miller explained this to be the conclusion of the story that did start out in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
"We always knew there was more to tell and that there's a lot to explore, but it wasn't until we were working on [Across the Spider-Verse] that we realized that this was the middle piece. So now, we actually have a proper plan and know what we're doing. At the time, we were just painting ourselves into a corner and trying to find a way out," said Miller.
He then continued:
"But yeah, that's it for us. We're so tired," laughed Miller.
