What to expect from The Substance?
The body horror thriller is the latest offering from the French writer/director Coralie Fargeat. She made a splashing feature film debut with the 2017 action thriller Revenge, which received rave reviews and accolades at independent film festivals.
The Substance features Demi Moore as a former Hollywood-A-lister-turned-aerobics-instructor Elisabeth Sparkle. When she turns 50, her boss Harvey (Dennis Quaid) fires her from her job for looking too old. Feeling dejected, Elisabeth turns to a mysterious substance that promises to produce a new version of herself in the form of a younger clone named Sue (Margaret Qualley).
The two have to switch places every seven days so that one can go out and about in the world while the other stays hidden and unconscious. Although initially thrilled for this new lease of life, Elisabeth grows increasingly resentful of Sue's youth and success. Despite being constantly reminded that they are one person, the two begin to jostle for a singular existence, leading to a stunning bloodfest.
