Actor Bradley Whitford called out Cheryl Hines for her silence regarding her husband, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., endorsing Donald Trump for president. On Saturday, August 24, 2024, the West Wing actor took to X to state:
"Hey @Cheryl Hines, way to stay silent while your lunatic husband throws his support behind the adjudicated r*pist who brags about stripping women of their fundamental rights. Gutsy. Great example for the kids. Profile in courage."
Along with his remarks, Whitford reposted a video from Kamala Harris' campaign, in which the former president thanked the Supreme Court justices who overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022. The actor alluded to the several cases of s*xual misconduct against Trump.
The actor's comment comes just a day after RFK Jr., who had been running his own campaign, dropped out of the 2024 U.S. presidential race and chose to support Trump.
"I deeply respect the decision Bobby made" — Cheryl Hines about RFJ Jr.'s move
RFK Jr. is the nephew of former president John F. Kennedy and son of former Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy. In October 2023, Robert announced he would run for president as an independent candidate (he was initially going to run as a Democrat). He chose Silicon Valley attorney Nicole Shanahan as his running mate.
Following his withdrawal announcement, Cheryl Hines took to X to support his decision in a lengthy post.
Hines thanked her husband's staff for their support towards her husband's campaign despite the roadblocks they faced. The Curb Your Enthusiasm actress added that she respects RFK Jr.'s decision, praising him for choosing "unity." Cheryl Hines concluded her comment, stating:
"I deeply respect the decision Bobby made to run on the principle of unity. Over the last year and a half, I have met some extraordinary people from all parties—Democrats, Republicans, and Independents. It's been my experience that the vast majority of all parties are truly good people who want the best for our country and for each other."
However, unlike her husband, Hines chose not to endorse any candidate. Kenndy Jr. later retweeted his wife's post, stating that he was grateful for her "unconditional love" despite her being "uncomfortable" with his "political decision."
Unlike Hines, Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s family is not happy with his decision to endorse Trump. His sister, Kerry Kennedy, criticized his move in a statement co-signed by four other family members.
They stated that endorsing Trump "was a betrayal of the values that (their) father and family" stand for, adding that it was a "sad ending for a sad story." They also expressed their support for Harris and her running mate, Tim Walz.
On Sunday, Robert told Fox News that he understood his family was troubled by his decision. But added that everyone "need(s) to be able to disagree with each other and still love each other."
Bradley Whitford has been a vocal supporter of Kamala Harris and has frequently shared posts criticizing Donald Trump. Both Whitford and Hines's posts received mixed reactions.
Cheryl Hines has not publicly reacted to Bradley Whitford's comment.
