Film Independent's president Josh Welsh died on New Year's Eve after a 5-year battle against colon cancer. For the unversed, Film Independent is a non-profit founded to advocate for independent filmmakers.
He became the co-president of Film Independent in 2012, before taking on the job full-time in 2013 after his fellow co-president Sean McManus stepped down. Film Independent reportedly grew under his tutelage, with Welsh responsible for partnering with studios, government bodies, and other NGOs for a global reach.
He also oversaw the organization's programs and operations, including budget and company growth. Josh Welsh's death was first made public on his Instagram page @meatyard, with a picture of him and his daughter. The post's caption read:
"Dear friends, Josh put down his guitar and left to sing with the angels on the last day of 2024. With broken hearts, we celebrate his tremendous life force; his generosity and his love of connection. We will carry him in our hearts forever."
