Actress Shelley Duvall passed away on July 11, 2024. Following her passing, a TikTok trend inspired by her began making headlines. It remains unclear as to whether she knew of the viral online occurrence before her death.

For those uninitiated, Shelley Duvall was best known for her appearance in The Shining. A few of her other popular works include Thieves Like Us, McCabe & Mrs. Miller, Buffalo Bill and the Indians, and 3 Women, among others.

Numerous TikTok users have recently uploaded videos of themselves saying “Hello, I’m Shelley Duvall” on the video-sharing platform. The people in the video can often be seen showcasing their outfits.

The sound clip originates from a compilation video of Duvall that was made in 2010.

The internet trend originated from a compilation video where the actress was seen wearing different outfits and surrounded by varying scenery. The original footage came from clips of Faerie Tale Theatre, a children’s television show that the actress hosted between 1982 and 1987.

The popular show aired on Showtime. Before the beginning of each episode, the actress introduced herself by saying the aforementioned phrase. Numerous actors appeared as guests on the hit show, including Billy Crystal, Susan Sarandon, Jeff Goldblum, Alan Arkin, James Earl Jones, Jeff Bridges, Helen Mirren, Leonard Nimoy, Christopher Reeve, and Elliott Gould, among others.

It seems someone stumbled upon the compilation clip and created the viral trend.

Oftentimes, the videos would be accompanied by comments where people would be wondering who Shelley Duvall actually was.

The actress, who also appeared on an episode of Dr. Phil, was 75 years old at the time of her passing. As per her spokesperson, Gary Springer, she died in her sleep of complications from diabetes. She was at her Blanco, Texas, residence at the time of her death.

Dan Gilroy, her life partner since 1989, released an official statement following her death. He said:

“My dear, sweet, wonderful life partner and friend left us. Too much suffering lately, now she’s free. Fly away, beautiful Shelley.”

Shelley Duvall often worked with her mentor, director, and screenwriter, Robert Altman, who launched her career by offering a role in Brewster McCloud in 1970. Speaking about why she chose to work with him repeatedly, she said in a 1977 The New York Times interview:

“He has a great confidence in me, and a trust and respect for me, and he doesn’t put any restrictions on me or intimidate me, and I love him.”

Altman had also said once that he admired Duvall for her ability to take on different kinds of roles, including that of a “charming, silly, sophisticated, pathetic, even beautiful” protagonist. The actress was identified by critics for her incredible talent. She won the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival. The now-internet star is survived by her brothers, Scott, Shane, and Stewart.
