Teri Garr, the Academy-nominated comedy actress and one of the true gems of Hollywood, breathed her last earlier today at the age of 79. The actress was suffering from multiple sclerosis, as revealed in October 2002 on Larry King’s CNN show. She had also reportedly undergone an emergency surgery to treat a brain aneurysm four years later.

Teri Garr hadn't acted in years and had effectively retired in 2011 following her appearance in How to Marry a Billionaire. She had an immense career before that, having been nominated for the Academy Award for her role in the iconic Tootsie. She also starred in Mel Brooks’s Young Frankenstein (1974), playing the role of Gene Wilder’s Transylvanian lab assistant.

With many, many other iconic roles behind her, Teri Garr had built a net worth of $6 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth. It's fair to assume that a lot of her fortune was spent on treating her disease, which has plagued her for over two decades. She also did some smart real estate deals, which perhaps contributed to her wealth.

Many Hollywood greats came forward to pay tribute to Teri Garr and her incredible career on this sad day when news of her demise broke.

Teri Garr acted in over 70 movies leading to her fortune

Garr reportedly started out as a background dancer working alongside Elvis Presley in several 1960s party films. But soon her career evolved to a much bigger affair when she started doing small roles in television and eventually broke out with her brilliant portrayal in Young Frankenstein, where she played Inga.

The same year, she also appeared in The Conversation, which is still regarded as one of the greatest movies ever made. Her career went on to encompass so much that it's hard to count how many movies and shows she has appeared in.

Some of her memorable films include Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Tootsie, Mr. Mom, The Player, Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker and After Hours, among others.

She also appeared in the very famous NBC sitcom Friends, where she played the role of Phoebe's mother.

Teri Garr also had a smart real estate deal

Apart from her fortune from movies, Garr also had made a smart real estate deal, which has reportedly earned her a fortune. In 1992, Garr reportedly paid $1.455 million for a 1,658-square-foot home in the Brentwood area of Los Angeles. It was a two-bedroom, three-bathroom home.

Years later, Garr reportedly made a profit on this property. She reportedly sold this house in June 2008 for a reported $3.944 million.

How did Teri Garr die?

Garr died after a long battle with multiple sclerosis, a chronic, degenerative disease of the nervous system. She revealed she had this back in 2002 and had even gone into a coma a few years later for a week before an emergency surgery saved her.

She also revealed that this had affected her ability to perform and she ultimately retired in 2011.

Teri Garr will remain one of the names in Hollywood that will never fade.
