Bob Newhart, the comedian and actor popular for his roles in Elf and The Big Bang Theory passed away on July 18, 2024, at 94 years of age. According to a statement by his publicist Jerry Digney, Bob Newhart died due to a series of short illnesses, and was surrounded by his family at his home in Los Angeles.

Born as George Robert Newhart in September 1929, Bob was initially an accountant who used to work for United States Gypsum and later ventured into the world of acting. He then started his journey as a comedian and released his comedy album, The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart, which became an instant hit amongst the masses.

This opened the doors to films and TV for the actor, as he later in appeared in many movies and television series.

Bob Newhart met his wife, Ginnie Quinn in the early 1960s. The duo then got married in January 1963 and welcomed their first kid, a son, Robert, the same year in November. In the following years, the couple welcomed three more kids, Timothy, who was born in 1967, Jennifer, born in 1973 and their last kid, Courtney, born in 1979.

Bob Newhart was close to his kids and his family. He often stated in interviews that his family was the most important to him.

In an interview with PBS in 2005, Bob Newhart’s wife, Ginnie opened up about how they were introduced by Buddy Hackett, as she stated:

“Buddy came home one day and you said, ‘I met this guy. And his name is Bobby Newhart. I played golf with him. And I think you should marry him,’ ”

The two then opened up that Buddy requested that if indeed the two get married, he would want them to name one kid “Buddy.” Hence, Bob claimed in a 2019 interview with People, that they call their daughter “Buddy.”

Ginnie Newhart also came from a Hollywood background. Her father, Bill Quinn, appeared in many TV shows throughout his career, starting with No Mother to Guide Her. According to an article by Today published on July 19, 2024, Ginnie was reportedly the one who came up with the idea of the twist on Newhart's finale which received a lot of appreciation from the masses.

Bob’s firstborn, Robert also followed the footsteps of his father, and tried his luck in acting. He was first featured in Heart and Souls. The second child, Timothy, too entered Hollywood, although briefly, as a production assistant and associate on multiple projects.

Timothy started his career by working as a production associate on his father’s show, Newhart, and later moved to Ferris Bueller and Get a Life. However, he ultimately changed his career path, and as per his LinkedIn profile, currently works as a history and social studies teacher at the Harvard-Westlake School.

Bob’s third child, Jennifer, never entered Hollywood. However, she was spotted many times with her father at various events. She reportedly handled her father’s social media accounts too.

Bob’s youngest child, Courtney joined the show business, appearing in one of the episodes of Newhart in 1986. She was then the production assistant for various TV shows.


As the iconic actor and comedian passed away, social media users and fans are now mourning the loss of the global star. No comments have been made by Bob’s family and details about the funeral and memorial services are yet to be revealed as of this writing.
