Rashida Jones comes from a lineage of artists from the music and film industries. Rashida Jones' mother is the popular actress Peggy Lipton who was famous in the 1960s for her role in The Mod Squad. Thereafter, she took a hiatus from work and made a comeback with her role as Norma Jennings in the show Twin Peaks. Rashida Jones' father was a famous music producer and songwriter Quincy Jones.
In a July 2024 interview with The New Yorker, Rashida Jones revisited the beef she had with rapper Tupac Shakur when he insulted her dad on a public forum. The late rapper reportedly called Quincy Jones out for being with 'white' women and his remarks left Rashida and her mother heartbroken.
However, the rapper was quick to meet Rashida Jones and her sister Kidada personally and issued a sincere apology. According to Rashida Jones, Tupac became 'family' after the reconciliation.
"We sat down and had a really good conversation about it, and then he was family," recalled Rashida Jones.
What did Tupac Shakur say about Rashida Jones' father? The beef and the reconciliation explained
In 1993, Tupac Shakur allegedly humiliated Quincy Jones in an interview with The Source.
"All he does is stick his d**k in white b**chs and make f**ked up kids," commented Tupac.
Rashida Jones recounted the entire beef in an interview with The New Yorker on July 7, 2024. The Parks and Recreation actress recalled that her mother was heartbroken after Tupac's comments and she wrote a letter slamming Shakur for his 'ignorance and lack of respect for his people.' Jones also slammed the late rapper for allegedly 'destroying his race.'
"I was so mad. It was a new perspective to me. I kind of understand the nuance more now that I’m older. It just felt like a completely unwarranted attack. My dad doesn’t work for the government. He’s a music producer. How he chooses to live his life and who he loves is just his own business, and I’ve always felt that way," explained Jones in the interview.
However, the reconciliation happened soon after as Rashida Jones recalled Tupac coming to New York to apologize to her for his insensitivity. He mistook Kidada for Rashida in New York and apologized to her for the things he said about Quincy.
"It resolved itself really nicely, because when I met him, he immediately apologized to me, immediately apologized to my dad," recalled Jones.
Rashida concluded by pointing out her overly 'self-righteous' attitude back in those days and how she changed over time and stopped looking at things in a binary way.
"You can say whatever you’re going to say, and you can mean it. And then, when you meet people, that can change. That was an early lesson for me, because I have been self-righteous in my life, and I really have worked hard to stop looking at things in a binary way. We’re so flawed and so complicated," concluded the Office actress.
Tupac Shakur died a few years later in 1996 after he was fatally wounded in a shooting in Las Vegas. Tupac's apology to Rashida and her family was so powerful that he ended up dating Rashida's sister Kidada in his final years before he was murdered.
Quincy Jones commented on the beef in a 2012 interview
Rashida Jones' father Quincy Jones also gave his views on the beef and reconciliation in an interview with The New York Times in 2012. The 91-year-old veteran shared that he initially wasn't happy with Tupac dating his daughter, but they had a heart-to-heart and Quincy Jones accepted his apology.
"I remember one night I was dropping Rashida at Jerry’s delicatessen, and Tupac was talking to Kidada because he was falling in love with her then. Like an idiot, I went over to him, put two arms on his shoulders and said, 'Pac, we gotta sit down and talk, man," narrated Quincy.
Thereafter, the Off The Wall producer explained how Tupac apologized sincerely and their differences disappeared after that. He ended the conversation by sharing a specific anecdote concerning the late rapper when he was on a date at the Bel-Air hotel.
"If he had had a gun, I would’ve been done. But we talked. He apologized. We became very close after that. Once, I was having a date at the Hotel Bel-Air, and he came by and told the waiter that he would be back, he was going home to put on a tie," concluded Quincy.
Quincy Jones has been a juggernaut in the music industry for several decades now. The 91-year-old has produced several albums of icons like Michael Jackson and has been nominated for the Grammys a whopping 79 times, winning 27 out of them. The veteran also has 7 Academy Award nominations under his belt.
