Land of the Lost was a children's adventure television show that chronicled the adventures of the Marshall family, consisting of Rick and his kids, Will and Holly. Milligan portrayed Rick Marshall in this series.

Rick was a widower and a park ranger, as well as the father of two kids. During a rafting trip down the Colorado River with his kids, a severe earthquake occurred, and the Marshalls were transported via a time portal to the Land of the Lost.

There, the Marshall family got trapped in the alternate universe where dinosaurs, humanoids, and lizard-like creatures, and Pakuni, a primate-like people, live.

Rick Marshall was an extremely astute decision-maker, often able to determine what needed to be done and how to execute it. When separated from his kids, he communicated with them via the mirror necklaces.

He also frequently talked with a lizard creature named Enik, offering guidance and imparting life lessons. In order to prepare himself for survival in the Land of the Lost, Spencer Milligan's character learned about the things that existed there.

Rick further played with the energy Crystals to see what combinations would work in the hopes of returning to his own time and place. He frequently experimented with the Pylons, tiny structures that resembled pyramids. Additionally, he and Will made maps of the Land of the Lost.

He developed telepathy, which Enik stated was brought on by his contact with the Sacred Smoke, a vaporous material that appeared in the Library of Skulls. After that, he was able to read Enik's thoughts. However, it was never made clear if Rick's telepathy was momentary or long-lasting.

Later, Spencer Milligan's character attempted to use Pylon to get Will, Holly, and himself home. Although he succeeded in opening a doorway, it proved unstable, unintentionally causing a massive calamity.

Rick was then driven out of the place just before the doorway closed. After that, the devastation caused by the calamity knocked over the crystal table in the Pylon. He then lost contact with Will and Holly, leaving them to start over until Jack Marshall, Rick's brother, arrived, possibly through the other end of the doorway.

The whereabouts and status of Spencer Milligan's character at the end of season 1 are unknown. It remains unclear if he made it back to Earth safely or if he entered a different dimension.

Although Spencer Milligan began his theatrical career in Illinois, he gained recognition through his role in Land of the Lost, appearing in 30 episodes between 1974 and 1975.

His notable works include movies like Sleeper (1973) and The Photographer (1974). He also appeared in TV series such as Land of the Lost (1974) and McCloud (1977), where he appeared for one episode.
