The 97th Academy Awards is seven months away, and John Mulaney is the latest candidate to say no to hosting the iconic event, as first reported by Puck News. He became the second potential candidate to refuse the gig after celebrity host Jimmy Kimmel reportedly turned down the offer as well.

Mulaney won hearts with his hosting gig at the Governor Awards, which many saw as a makeshift audition for the Academy Awards. In fact, The Hollywood Reporter even asked the 41-year-old in 2023 whether he would host the Academy Awards, and Mulaney was very optimistic about it.

“Sure, why not? It would be really fun. It’s hosting the Academy Awards. Johnny Carson did that,” replied Mulaney.

Therefore, many fans assumed that he would be the one hosting the event next year before the rejection was made public. The internet has gone gaga over the news, and many fans have posted their opinions on X (formerly Twitter). Some of their reactions are as follows:

"John Mulaney why in the world did you pass on this opportunity," tweeted one fan.

"Dear Academy, Make it happen," opined another fan.
"Jimmy Kimmel will not return to host/John Mulaney was offered it but passed," commented another.

Several others requested Mulaney to overturn his decision and host the Oscars.

"i want john mulaney to host the oscar’s," implored one fan.
"i'm now hearing john mulaney turned it down which is devastating bc his field of dreams bit last year was extremely funny and charming. fingers crossed the muppets are offered the spot next," opined another.
"john mulaney would’ve been perfect :(" tweeted one fan on X.

Some netizens expressed their disappointment:

"omg what a perfect Oscars we could’ve had with John Mulaney DAMMIT," expressed one fan.
"John Mulaney passing on this has ruined my day. They should give it to John Oliver or Bill Harder to fix this," declared another.

However, The Academy still has over seven months to find another host as the Oscars ceremony is not until March 2, 2025.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the first offer to host the Oscars went to Jimmy Kimmel. Jimmy has been one of the most established late-night show hosts in the industry and has emceed Jimmy Kimmel Live! for over twenty years now.

The late-night show host has already hosted the Oscars a total of four times, including the last two consecutive years. Fans expected him to be the most obvious choice to score a hattrick of hosting gigs at the Oscars, but the 56-year-old turned down the offer made by The Academy.

His last Oscar-hosting gig in 2024 included one of the most memorable moments in the history of the award ceremony. The show ended with La La Land being announced as the Best Picture instead of Moonlight, which was the actual winner.

The huge slip resulted in La La Land's crew going up the stage to collect their award when Jimmy Kimmel went up the stage and cleared the ambiguity.

"I blame myself for this. I knew I would screw this show up, I really did," said Kimmel to the audience.

Later, it was realized that the award presenters Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty had opened the wrong envelope containing the name of the Best Actress winner which went to Emma Stone for La La Land.
