Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande are currently on a Wicked press tour in Sydney, Australia, promoting the upcoming film. It is set to release in the country on November 21, 2024, a day before it releases in US cinemas. During their tour, the pair participated in an interview with Australian radio host Kent Small, aka Smallzy, on November 4.
However, when clips of the 5-minute interview circulated on social media, fans quickly pointed out that the Nova Network host seemingly ignored Erivo.
A Reddit user, Sleepy-Giraffe947, slammed the interviewer for being "uncool" with how he left out Cynthia Erivo in favor of asking Ariana Grande questions. The Reddit user pointed out that he could have asked for a solo interview if he only wanted to talk to the Thank You, Next singer.
Other fans took to social media to share their disappointment with the interview. They said that they felt bad for Cynthia Erivo while praising Ariana Grande for including her co-star in the conversations.
"istfg I feel so bad to Cynthia. No wonder she's so sensitive about what ppl say. SHES THE F**KING MAIN CHARACTER," an X user wrote.
"Horrible interviewers. They're Ariana fans and only care gaining engagements from her," another X user wrote.
"I hate people who go out of their way to make another person feel out of place, that's just a sad sad feeling. Props to Ariana for trying to involve Cynthia in the conversation," a user on X added.
Additionally, netizens pointed out the flaw of Smallzy's questions. They suggest that he should have stuck with questions about the film instead of straying into other topics like Ariana Grande's beauty brand and tour.
"With this interview I actually felt a bit sad for Cynthia. The last 3 questions were for Ariana only and Ariana included her by saying that Cynthia also had a funny story to share and then it was just rem beauty and about the tour," an X user commented.
"Yeah it's p*ssing me off that people are so focused on Ariana and ignoring Cynthia. Keep the talk to Wicked alone. That's the point of the press tour," a user on X said.
Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande's Wicked is coming to theaters in November 2024
Cynthia Erivo's Elphaba and Ariana Grande's Glinda are set to make their big-screen debut in Wicked, which will be released in US theaters on November 22. However, before US fans can watch the movie, Wicked will premiere in Australian cinemas the day before on November 21, 2024.
The movie will be released in two parts, with part 1 coming to theaters on the release date and part 2 following in November next year. Wicked follows the unlikely friendship between the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch when they were still aspiring witches. It's set long before Dorothy ventured into the Land of Oz.
Cynthia Erivo teased that Wicked is going to be "unlike anything you've ever seen before" during a February 2022 Entertainment Weekly interview. The film also stars Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Jeff Goldblum, and Oscar-winning Michelle Yeoh.
