Netflix's latest rom-com, starring Nicole Kidman and Zac Efron, A Family Affair was released on Friday, June 28, 2024. It saw Kidman and Efron reunite on screen as lovers over a decade after they were seen in 2012's The Paperboy. In an interview with People on Thursday, the two stars discussed what it was like to work together again after 12 years.

Zac Efron admitted to being "so enamored" by Kidman, stating that he still pinches himself when he realizes who he is working with.

"There's a part of me that pinches myself when I realize who I'm working with a lot. I think that was more pronounced during The Paperboy because I was a lot younger. I was very nervous back then," the actor said.

Meanwhile, Kidman discussed how it was easier to film her and Efron's intimate love scenes in The Family Affair as she had previously worked with him. She said that it was "helpful" to film intimate scenes when the two actors have "a history together because it's easy." She added that she was "incredibly trusting of Zac.

The High School Musical star echoed the sentiment, adding that they both felt safe and took care of each other.

As previously mentioned, Efron and Kidman worked together in the 2012 crime thriller The Paperboy. It sees Efron's wide-eyed Jack fall in love with Kidman's much older character, who was romantically linked to a convicted killer.

In A Family Affair, they reunite as lovers with Efron, a movie star, making moves on Kidman, who is the mother of his personal assistant, played by Joey King.

Zac Efron noted that the original title stood out to him and made the "script stay on top of the pile." He recalled wondering what the film could be about. Kidman added that the NSFW title didn't make its way to Netflix but noted that the film was a "breath of fresh air," especially in the rom-com genre.

"We've had it from way back with older men and younger women, that's always been the norm. It's okay, it's completely acceptable... The problem is we've not had the equivalent from all different viewpoints, with women telling the stories," the actress said.

The Netflix film is set to give viewers a different perspective on the classic tale of an old man in love with a young woman, as it will show an older woman with a younger man.

Zac Efron also mentioned that filming A Family Affair coincided with his preparation to play Kevin Von Erich in the biographical sports drama The Iron Claw.

Zac Efron and Nicole Kidman's new movie also stars Joey King and will have dramatic romantic entanglements on a lighthearted rom-com background.
