After the initial critical failure and commercial success of Rebel Moon, Zack Snyder's epic space movie along the lines of Lucas' famed Star Wars franchise, the two-part Odyssey is ready to return to Netflix with a director's cut.
As of the latest statement from Netflix, Rebel Moon — Chapter One: Chalice of Blood and Chapter Two: Curse of Forgiveness, will drop on August 2, 2024
The veteran director, who had previously announced that the film would return with a director's cut, has also named the director's cut versions differently from the two previous movies.
The first movie in the franchise was originally released on December 15, 2023, and opened to negative reviews. It still became one of the most-watched movies on the platform at the time and ended up making a good profit. The follow-up was released on April 19, 2024, and did not change the perception of the prequel much, unlike what many fans had expected.
Netflix promises a "viciously sexier, bloodier" version of Rebel Moon in director's cut
Zack Snyder is no stranger to director's cut, with a long-drawn saga around the director's cut of Justice League, which, too, had originally failed critically. However, its director's cut was praised and lauded by fans.
This may be the case with the new versions of the Netflix movie as well, which could lead to some great reception from fans.
Netflix addressed the upcoming Zack Snyder cuts, saying in a statement:
"Delve further into the mythology and madness of Zack Snyder’s epic sci-fi saga in the viciously sexier, bloodier world of ‘Rebel Moon — Chapter One: Chalice of Blood’ and ‘Rebel Moon – Chapter Two: Curse of Forgiveness,
It further elaborates:
"In Snyder’s director’s cut, a peaceful settlement on a moon in the furthest reaches of the universe finds itself threatened by the armies of the tyrannical Regent Balisarius, and Kora (Sofia Boutella), a mysterious stranger living among the villagers, becomes their best hope for survival."
"Tasked with finding trained fighters who will unite with her in making an impossible stand against the Motherworld, Kora assembles a small band of warriors — outsiders, insurgents, peasants, and orphans of war who share a common need for redemption and revenge. As the shadow of an entire Realm bears down on the unlikeliest of moons, a new army of heroes is formed," it continues.
Zack Snyder had previously told Tudum that the new versions of the movies will consist of at least an hour's worth of new footage, which is significantly less than the footage added to Justice League in the director's cut. However, it can still dynamically alter things for the better.
He explained how this would differ from the normal one in terms of quality. Snyder had told Tudum:
"You really get to see a lot. It’s just more painted-in all the way. The director’s [cut] is a settle-in deep dive, which I have notoriously done throughout my career. I don’t know how I got into this director’s cut thing, but what I will say about it is that, for me, the director’s cuts have always been something I had to fight for in the past and nobody wanted it."
Both Rebel Moon — Chapter One: Chalice of Blood and Chapter Two: Curse of Forgiveness will drop on Netflix on August 2, 2024.
