Nice Girls is a French film currently streaming on Netflix. The buddy cop comedy is directed by Noémie Saglio. It has French actors Alice Taglioni and Stéfi Celma in the lead roles. They are joined by Noémie Lvovsky and Baptiste Lecaplain in supporting roles. Nice Girls was released exclusively on Netflix on August 21, 2024.

The action-comedy film attempts to replicate the action and excitement of Ocean's 8, with the humor of The Heat. It is centered on reckless but quick-witted cop Léo and the levelheaded detective Mélanie. They come together to investigate the murder of their close friend Ludo.

Despite an interesting premise, stunning location, and great acting by the stellar cast, the film falls short of leaving a good impression on the viewer, mostly due to its cumbersome plot.

No chemistry between the leads in Nice Girls

In any buddy cop comedy, there is that one quintessential factor that either tops or drops the film, and that is the chemistry between the two leads. Sadly, Nice Girls lacks in this department. The characters of Léo and Mélanie are supposed to be enemies turned best friends, but the growth of their relationship lacks depth.

The repetitive attempts at creating a "BFF" dynamic between the two feel forced and ultimately unconvincing. Without that real connection between the main characters, the viewer feels detached from the story.

A convoluted and exhausting plot

The movie opens with a murder case and then quickly spirals out of control into a conspiracy involving a climate change summit, the assassination of a young activist, and a plan to sabotage the sale of electric cars. The action sequences are impressive, but it is the overtly complicated plot that holds back the film. By the time the actual bad guys are finally revealed, the viewer is left more confused than interested.

Misplaced focus and missed potential

Despite being titled Nice Girls, the movie's focus often moves away from the two female leads thanks to an excessive number of plot twists and secondary characters. Little importance is given to the character development of the protagonists, which then fails to establish a connection between the viewer and the detective duo. Ultimately, Nice Girls neither works as an action film nor a cop-comedy.

Overall the film disappoints with the lack of little chemistry between the leads and a confusing plotline. Needless to say, there are much better female-led films out there.

However, despite all the shortcomings, Alice Taglioni and Stéfi Celma manage to pack in a couple of impressive action scenes that are very well choreographed. Katrina Durden, who plays the ruthless assassin Kim, is particularly convincing in her role. The ensemble cast of Baptiste Lecaplain and Noémie Lvovsky provides much support to the main protagonists and exhibits perfect comedic timing in each scene. The stunning cinematography and smooth camera work succeeds in momentarily transporting the viewer to the French Riviera.

Nice Girls is available on Netflix.
