Robert Eggers' highly anticipated Nosferatu (2024) is all set to hit the screens this Christmas. The gothic horror film is based on the 1922 silent German film, Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror. The 1922 film was created by expressionist filmmaker F.W. Murnau and is considered one of the cornerstones of gothic cinema.

This upcoming adaptation stars Bill Skarsgård as Count Orlok, the infamous vampire, alongside Lily-Rose Depp as Ellen Hutter, and Emma Corrin and Nicholas Hoult in other prominent roles. The film's inspiration can be traced back to the lore of Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel Dracula, which inspired Murnau’s version.

The original 1922 version itself is known as an unauthorized adaptation of Dracula, which resulted in legal disputes and almost led to the destruction of all original film prints. Read along to know more about Nosferatu (2024).

Robert Eggers is the director and writer of critically acclaimed films like The Witch, The Lighthouse, and The Northman. From the trailer of his upcoming release, it can be deduced that Eggers is bringing his signature approach of historical authenticity and atmospheric dread back to the screens with his fourth full-length film, which explores themes of obsession and supernatural terror.

The film promises to be visually striking, and in his interview with AnOther Magazine (Autumn/Winter 2024 issue), Eggers said,

"I saw Murnau’s film when I was nine, and the cool thing was that the VHS I had was from this degraded 16-millimetre print, and you couldn’t see the line of the bald cap or the grease paint and Max Schreck seems like a real vampire — that is what hooked me on his performance."

Plot summary of Nosferatu (2024)

The official synopsis of the 2024 film, as released by Focus Features, states,

"Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu is a gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman and the terrifying vampire infatuated with her, causing untold horror in its wake."

As per an Esquire article dated May 29, 2024, Skarsgård talked to the magazine about his significant physical and vocal transformation for the role of Count Orlok. He detailed how the performance demanded extensive makeup work, weight loss, and training with an opera coach to achieve the lowest possible vocal pitch.

He quoted his transformation process as "conjuring pure evil," and fans can expect the final look to be grotesque and provocatively eerie. The studio recently released new posters for the characters of Lily-Rose Depp, Nicholas Hoult, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Willem Dafoe, and Emma Corrin.

However, Skarsgård’s look has not been released yet, in the trailer or otherwise. Therefore, fans are looking forward to the unveiling of the modern Count Orlok in December. Eggers has described the film as his passion project, and the audience can hope for a blend of horror and mystery with modern vampire mythos.

US viewers can catch Nosferatu (2024) in theatres on December 25, 2024.
