What takes place in the woods?
Nolan is a food writer living in the city, who wants to work on a story of human's primitive way of gathering food through hunting and making a connection with the food we eat. So he asks his girlfriend, Sophie, an ex-hunter turned vegan, to spend a weekend together in a cabin, in the deepest woods of Canada. Sophie decides to call her childhood friend Kyle and his girlfriend to the cabin.
She hopes to spend some quality time as sisters with Kyle's girlfriend in the cabin, while Kyle and Nolan will be out there bonding as brothers, while Kyle teaches Nolan more about hunting and survival skills. But the seemingly friendly plan turns a little heavy when Kyle shows up at the last moment, saying his girlfriend couldn't make it.
Soon, the viewers realize that Kyle and Sophie had shared an intimate bond in the past, and Kyle still has feelings for Sophie. Nolan observes that Kyle is making moves toward Sophie, so frustrated and drunk he ends up announcing that they are engaged, despite Sophie's plan to let Kyle know about it at the right time. Out Come The Wolves soon turns into a hunting rivalry between the two men, when Sophie becomes the prize, the prey.
What happens to Nolan in Out Come The Wolves
Right after Nolan goes on to announce their engagement, the subtextual love triangle between the three surfaces above. Listening to Nolan, Kyle reveals in front of Sophie that they had made a promise to only marry each other when they were twelve. He even goes on to ridicule Sophie's decision of choosing to marry someone after knowing them only for a year.
All Sophie wanted was to bring her childhood friend and her partner together. But she soon realizes that the plan has gone massively wrong. While they go hunting, Kyle's instructions feel threatening. Nolan, who has never even shot a single arrow in his life is severely distressed Kyle shoots a deer with an arrow, but lets it die painfully instead of killing it completely.
Kyle goes on to use his shotgun to shoot another deer, but Nolan requests him to let the previous deer out of its pain. But right when they decide to move behind, they realize that a wolf is feasting on the deer's intestines. Nolan quickly tries to make a run which catches the wolf's attention and it jumps over him. Kyle though proud of his hunting and surviving skills, is completely frozen in this situation.
But though he is afraid, the audience realizes that he can still make a move, shoot the wolf, and save Nolan. But his intentions are darker, he enjoys watching the scene as the wolf chews Nolan alive. He wants to clear Nolan out of the way to get Sophie finally.
Does Sophie save Nolan at the end of Out Come The Wolves?
Kyle runs off from the scene, saving his life and letting Nolan be eaten completely. We get to know that Sophie is pregnant, and is traumatized when she sees Kyle running to the house, all bloody and without Nolan. Sophie despite being a vegan has been a very skilled hunter once, far better than Kyle. Without wasting any more time, she rushes off to the woods on the ATV, dragging Kyle with her because he only knows the way.
Sophie's survival instincts warn her that Kyle is somewhat responsible for Nolan's situation when she sees the deer shot. She soon realizes that Kyle had deviated from the path towards the South while they were supposed to go North, knowing it was inhibited by deadly wolves. He shot the deer with with shotgun, to make a loud noise and get their attention. The deer was shot by the arrow which created an open wound, letting the scent of blood spread on the surroundings.
Throughout the way, Kyle keeps on making Sophie believe that Nolan is not a strong choice for her which makes it more evident. The scene shifts back to Nolan, who is covered in blood with open wounds everywhere. Shockingly, he is still alive and tries to find his way back with Kyle's compass but his bitten legs don't have enough strength to walk.
On the way, Sophie's vehicle deviates and is thrown into the woods. Sophie dislocates her wrist. Things are not good for Kyle anymore. He finds himself surrounded by a hungry pack of wolves, who start feasting on him quickly, and neither his hunting equipment could save him, from getting torn apart.
Sophie is also attacked by the wolves, but her survival instincts come into action. She relocates her wrist and shoots the wolf coming right at her. The predator still reaches her, and she has to stab it deep to get it off. The viewers realize that despite Sophie's decision to not hunt and take lives, she is still the same and even stronger. With just a few weapons, she took out the strongest predator.
Out Come The Wolves ends with Sophie touching the dead wolf's body with remorse, knowing she doesn't have any other option. Sophie gives farewell to her childhood friend, and sets off on the ATV, carrying Nolan with her. She ends up proving that kindness is not a weakness but a decision made.
