On a recent Qantas flight from Sydney to Haneda, passengers were forced to watch Daddio, starring Dakota Johnson and Sean Penn. They could not step out of it since it wasn't even possible to pause, change the movie, or even switch it off.

This film has a runtime of 101 minutes and was rated R for language, s*xual material, and brief graphic nudity. It was highly acclaimed because of the richly intimate storytelling, supplemented by strong lead acting.

The R-rated film shocked families on the flight, traveling with children as they were forcefully subjected to unsavory scenes. Later, the airline issued a public apology, stating that the film was screened because of technical issues with the entertainment system.

A disturbing experience for families

Many passengers expressed their outraged opinions on social media concerning the film's explicit scenes. One of the passengers called the film "40 minutes of pen*s and b**bs," saying that it is a surprising scene not only for both the parents and children who happened to be on that flight.

According to the passengers, "there were audible gasps across the plane" as they realized the nature of the film. Since the entertainment system was locked, the passengers could not stop or change the movie until staff from Qantas intervened and changed it to a more family-friendly selection.

How did it happen?

Qantas blamed the failure on a faulty entertainment system, which would not allow a passenger to choose a film and could not be paused or changed at any time. The airline admitted this was unusual and that the standard procedure allowed the passengers to choose whatever they wanted to watch at any point during a flight.

Once the staff members diagnosed the problem, they quickly rectified the situation by changing the screens to a more suitable film. Qantas said it would review its systems to ensure that such an incident would not recur in the future.

What is the plot of Daddio?

Daddio is a 2023 American drama film directed and written by Christy Hall. The main cast includes Dakota Johnson and Sean Penn, and Johnson also serves as the film's executive producer. It premiered at the 2023 Telluride Film Festival on September 1, 2023, and was released in the United States on June 28, 2024.

The film follows a young woman named Girlie, played by Dakota Johnson. On her way back from a trip to Manhattan, she has a deep conversation with Clark, played by Sean Penn, her taxi driver. The conversation discusses connection, childhood traumas, and relationships.

Daddio opens with Girlie (Dakota Johnson), who hails a cab at JFK Airport driven by Clark (Sean Penn). On their way to Manhattan, the talks go beyond small talk and deeper into their personal life. Girlie starts talking about her recent breakup and the emotional fight she is going through.

Clark shares his estranged relationship with his daughter and confesses his regrets. The entire plot of Daddio is elaborated in that confined space of the taxi, thus intensifying the dialogue between the two characters. The film concludes when both characters share a part of their lives, gaining new insights and understanding.

Daddio is available to watch on Prime Video. Other platforms, such as Google Play, Apple TV, Fandango at Home, and YouTube, also rent it.
