The film's plot centers on the title character, Pearl, who aspires to be a celebrity and lead a luxurious life. However, she is constrained by her stern mother and ailing father. As her aspirations consume her, she goes on a murderous rampage, eliminating everyone who stands in her way, and she turns into an insane serial murderer.

The official synopsis of the film reads:

"Filmmaker Ti West returns with another chapter from the twisted world of X, in this astonishing follow-up to the year's most acclaimed horror film. Trapped on her family's isolated farm, Pearl must tend to her ailing father under the bitter and overbearing watch of her devout mother. Lusting for a glamorous life .....inspired origin story of X's iconic villain."

The movie concludes with Howard, the titular character's husband, returning home to find out that she has killed both her parents. Seeing their dead bodies, Howard goes into a mute state. Howard decides to stay with his wife, fearing that if he tries to run away, perhaps she might slay him too.

Pearl film ending explained

What did Pearl do while Howard was away?

While Howard was away, Pearl did her daily housework and looked after the farm initially. However, living in a dull environment with a controlling mother and an ailing father was not something Pearl wanted. She wanted a life of her own, where she could pursue her dreams, become an actor/dancer, and explore life in her own way. She visited the theater, where she met the projectionist and eventually had an affair with him.

However, with Howard away, her mental state deteriorates. The way of life she expected post-marriage and the way she was living, disappointed her to her core. Her maniac and killing tendencies first appear when she kills a duck on her farm and feeds it her crocodile. Later, she even kills her parents.

During dinner, Pearl argues with her mother, which turns into a big fight. Her mother's dress catches fire, causing severe burns. Although she initially tries to save her mother, she later changes her mind and lets her suffer in a half-dead state. Later, when she comes back home, after spending the night out, she first kills the projectionist, who suspects something wrong in the house. She stabs him to death just when he decides to leave and sits in his car.

She then suffocates her father by covering his face, leading to his death. Lastly, she kills Mitsy after she confesses her crimes to her and tells her not to tell anyone. However, Pearl, being the maniac, ends up killing her the same way she killed the projectionist. After Mitsy's death, she dismembers her body part by part and feeds it to the crocodile in the lake. She also dumps the body of the projectionist in the lake, along with his car.

Does Pearl get selected for the dance tour?

No, the titular character does not get selected in the dance auditions that happen in the church and does not get to be a part of the team. Although she dons the red gown and is confident that she will be the one who will be selected. The judges tell her that although her performance was fabulous, they are looking for something else.

She begs them for another chance, saying it was the best dance of her life and she is a 'star,' but they do not listen to her. Ultimately, she is dragged out of the room in denial after being rejected.

After Pearl, Mitsy goes for the auditions and is selected. In the final moments of the film, when Mitsy reveals her selection to Pearl, she seems to be already aware of it. She eventually kills Mitsy later on because she is also jealous of the fact that Mitsy was selected and she was not, apart from the fact that Mitsy knew all her secrets by then.

Throughout the movie, Howard is seen sending letters to his wife, but he only appears at the very end, right before the credits start to roll. Pearl confesses everything she has to say to Mitsy, which leads to Mitsy's demise. Pearl confesses to Mitsy that she loves and hates Howard, however, she will fix all her mistakes once he is back.

Yes, Howard decides to stay with his wife, but does Howard live? We do not have an answer to that, and perhaps the second part of the film will reveal more. The film ends with Howard entering the house, looking at the dinner table, and going in terrible shock after finding out that his wife has killed both her parents. He sees two dead bodies and a table full of rotten food with germs crawling over it.

When his wife sees him and tells him how happy she is to see him home, Howard is still shocked and does not utter a word. Will she kill Howard too, now that Howard has found out about her slaying her parents? Perhaps she will not give Howard the same fate, which is, however, highly unlikely.

However, if Howard dies, then her shot at a lavish life will be forever gone. In the end, with the projectionist dead and not being selected for the dance team, Howard is the only person who can help her fulfill her dreams. However, will she keep him alive? That is the question of the hour that remains.
