The sequel to 1998's Practical Magic, which was released by Warner Bros., is set to happen, as confirmed by Variety. The prequel included Dianne West, Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock, as the three stellar names came together for a unique romantic comedy revolving around a family of witches.

Bullock and Kidman played the roles of sisters Sally and Gillian Owens, who come to terms with a family curse that spells doom for any man falling in love with a woman of their family. Based on Alice Hoffman’s novel of the same name, Practical Magic has a 6.3 IMDB rating, and the following official synopsis:

“Two witch sisters, raised by their eccentric aunts in a small town, face closed-minded prejudice and a curse which threatens to prevent them ever finding lasting love.”

Now, Warner Bros. has finally heeded clamor from fans about a sequel, which has been a long time coming. Back in 2019, HBO announced a new rendition of the movie titled Rules of Magic. Now however, a sequel has been taken up by Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman on their own and is set to see the return of multiple characters from the original.

Both Kidman and Bullock are set to reprise their roles in the sequel, although it is set to revolve around a range of new characters. People had confirmed back on June 15th, 2024 that both actresses are working on the project, which is set to have a screenplay written by Akiva Goldsman, most notably known for her work on A Beautiful Mind.

The two Oscar-winning actors are set to collaborate with Denise Di Novi for the sequel, which will also see the return of Goran Visnjic, who played the role of James Angelov in the original. Angelov was Gillian’s love in the movie, and the three names are the only ones confirmed to be returning for the sequel thus far.

The likes of Dianne West and Stockard Channing, who played the two aunts of Bullock and Kidman’s characters, may also return, although that has not been confirmed thus far. Di Novi revealed in an interview that ‘deals are already’ in process and the movie is set to be released sometime in 2025, according to Entertainment Weekly.

If that turns out to be true, a range of information can be expected in the coming weeks, although no official release date has been announced as of yet. The announcement of the sequel itself was made following the announcement of Practical Magic being made available to stream on Max, which also happened in June 2024.

What to expect from Practical Magic 2?

According to Entertainment Weekly, the sequel is confirmed to be based on Alice Hoffman’s 2022 novel titled The Book of Magic and will revolve around a range of new characters from the Owens family, alongside a ‘long-lost’ brother who all unite to bring an end to the curse plaguing their family.

Hence, the Practical Magic sequel is set to see the three generations of the Owens family come together to break the curse, as they will travel to the English countryside where Maria Owens initially cast the spell that doomed the family.
