Red One is a Christmas fantasy adventure movie directed by Jake Kasdan, who is known for his work in the Jumanji franchise. The script is written by Chris Morgan, based on a story by Himan Garcia, who also serves as one of the film's producers. Created exclusively for Amazon MGM studios, this reportedly high-budget CGI action movie made its premiere in the United Kingdom on November 6, 2024.
The story of Red One takes place a day before Christmas when Santa Claus is kidnapped from the North Pole, by a Christmas witch named Gryla. Callum, the security head operative at ELF (Enforcement Logistics and Fortification), joins with notorious hacker Jack O'Malley, to track down Santa and save Christmas. Dwayne Johnson, Chris Evans, and J.K. Simmons lead the storyline as lead actors.
At the end of Red One, Callum and Jack manage to track Gryla hiding in the North Pole itself. After an initial battle, and failing to deliver the snow globes, Gryla takes her true form to kill them all. But Santa's stepbrother Krampus arrives at the scene and assists them to fight her off.
The reindeer, furious of being tied to chains, attacks Gryla and pushes her into the cart of snow globes capturing her. Finally, Callum and Jack succeed in saving Santa Claus, who retrieves his powers and manages to deliver all the gifts on Christmas night.
Why did Callum want to retire in Red One?
Red One introduces the viewers to the mythical world of Santa Claus (J. K. Simmons), at the beginning of the story. Santa Claus actually exists in the world and possesses superhuman strength. Named St. Nick or the Red One, the athletic Santa runs his operation of distributing gifts on Christmas, from the North Pole, which is handled by the ELF.
The Enforcement, Logistics, and Fortification (ELF) is an army of staff, including humans, and mythical creatures like a Polar Bear named Garcia. They manage the system of distributing gifts all over the world every Christmas.
Callum Drift (Dwayne Johnson) is a trusted warrior and partner of Santa Claus, who has been with him for 542 years. After working for so long, Callum wants to take his retirement because his faith in Christmas is slowly fading away. Malice is quickly growing in the world, and the list of naughty people in the world has outnumbered the nice ones.
Nick is very upset about this. Realizing that he can't change Callum's decision, he invites his most faithful warrior to join him for one last ride. Viewers see that the fantasy world of the North Pole is protected by a dome, under surveillance by a team of experts.
The mystical members of the warehouse have worked throughout the year, just to be prepared enough for that single night. But Callum's decision to leave ELF changes when Santa Claus is abducted.
Who is the abductor of Santa Claus in Red One?
While investigating the team responsible for the abduction, ELF staff realizes that a level-four naughty lister known as Jack 'the Wolf' O'Malley (Chris Evans) has hacked into their system, and geolocated Nick's whereabouts.
The movie frame then shifts towards Jack O'Malley, who is also an expert sneak thief. He clearly doesn't seem to have a good relationship with his estranged family, especially his son Dylan, whose responsibility he doesn't want to take.
Eventually, Jack O'Malley is caught by the authorities of MORA. Mythological Oversight and Restoration Authority (MORA) is an organization responsible for keeping track of all mythological beings. Its head Zoe orders Jack to track the location of the abductor, like he had figured out Santa's location. On this mission, he is joined by Callum, who is clearly not happy with his new co-worker.
Tracking the leads brings them to the sandy beaches of Aruba where they find Ted, the middleman in the abduction deal. After an initial scrimmage, Ted reveals that the female kidnapper is a horrific mythical being, and he can't pronounce her name because she would get to know about it then. He writes her name on the sand, and it turns out to be the notorious Christmas Witch Gryla (Kiernan Shipka).
Despite the warning, Callum and Jack pronounce Gryla's name and the witch receives the signals of their location. She possesses Ted and sends the message that she wants every naughty in the world to behave. Hence, she will be punishing everyone who has committed any kind of wrong in their entire life.
An ice cream truck slowly comes out of the shores, which opens up to reveal three giant snowmen, hungry to freeze them. After a showdown, Callum and Jack manage to save themselves, but Ted gets frozen. They pin the snowmen down after taking off the carrots from their nose. The two then embark on a journey to finally find Gryla, and save the world.
Callum and Jack save Christmas in the ending Red One
The audience gets to know that Gryla is a 900-year-old witch, with 13 sons who are all shapeshifters like her. By this time Callum realizes that Jack is not inherently a wrong person, but his situations have made him do things. The two visit the Hell House, which belongs to Santa's step-brother, Krampus (Kristofer Hivju). The goat beast denies providing any intel and instead tries to seize them.
He provides Jack a decision to leave the place, while they will keep Callum. This becomes his biggest test. Going against his inherent behaviors, he decides to save Callum, hence, making the choice to be nice.
Fighting off gargoyles and hellhounds, the duo manages to get out of the place. But while driving on the highway, they find a piano. They stop by to discover it has a gift belonging to Jack.
The gift turns out to be a snow globe, the weapon Gryla had been mass-producing to capture every naughty lister on the planet. Jack's son Dylan calls his father at this time, asking about a similar snow globe he had received, which he thinks is a gift from his father. Dylan is trapped by the snow globe, and Jack decides to put his life under threat to save his son. Callum departs the location in search of Gryla.
While having a conversation with Mrs. Claus (Bonnie Hunt), a member of ELF, Callum realizes that she is a shapeshifter. MORA finds out that the entire North Pole has been hijacked by Gryla and her Armies, and the Red One never went anywhere else. Gryla had kept him hidden in the North Pole itself, to have the least suspicion.
Callum storms in, knocking every shapeshifter on the way, then setting all ELF members free. While Jack confronts all the bad things he ever did to his son, and asks for his forgiveness. As he repents for the bad things he had done and tries to change them, this transformation makes him into a good person, hence, redeeming him from his crimes. Both the snow globes shatter, releasing him and Dylan.
They stop the machine with which Gryla has been mass-producing the snow globes. But by this time, she is ready to take off with the sleigh, carrying a cart full of magical globes to capture every naughty lister in the world. The reindeers are shacked and whipped forcefully to move. Callum and Jack manage to reach there at the right time, setting the reindeer free. The duo ultimately tracks down, Nick the Red One.
Meanwhile, Gryla's mission is unsuccessful. Falling into utter rage, she comes into her true form. Before she could kill them, Krampus makes an unexpected visit to assist them in their fight. Gryla's powers are terrifying, and with Santa still out of his powers, they struggle to stop him. But finally, the herd of reindeer rush into the scene, saving them all. They push Gryla into the cart full of snow globes, capturing her into one.
Callum frees Santa Claus from the machine which was earlier used to drain his powers. He comes back into consciousness, and thanks his step-brother for showing up. Callum and Jack finally save the Red One, while also receiving their precious gifts.
Meanwhile, Jack gets his son back and Callum begins to realize that his faith is coming back again. Jack decides to make a fresh start, while Callum decides to stay in ELF and assist Santa for many more Christmases to come.
