Red River is a 1988 television film that's a remake of the iconic Western from 1948 with the same name. Under the direction of Richard Michaels, this adaption tells the tale of a rancher and his adopted son.

It led a cattle drive from Texas to Kansas. A new generation of viewers is introduced to the epic story through the film, which delves into issues of leadership, loyalty and the hardships of the Old West.

The film's synopsis reads:

"After the Civil War, rancher Thomas Dunson (James Arness) leads a dangerous cattle drive across Texas with a team that includes his adopted son, Matthew (Bruce Boxleitner), and black cowboy Jack Byrd (Stan Shaw), whose presence annoys some of the white cowboys.
"Fearful of Indians and struggling through the dry terrain, Dunson's men grow increasingly unhappy with his authoritarian ways. Fed up, rebellious Matthew goes to work for another ranch, infuriating his father."

James Arness plays the rough and determined cowboy Thomas Dunson. His character serves as the cattle drive leader. His persona is renowned for his severe manner and unyielding character.

Arness is well remembered for playing Marshal Matt Dillon in the enduring television series Gunsmoke (1955–1975). Throughout his four-decade career, he also starred in movies like Hondo (1953) and The Thing from Another World (1951), which helped to make him a Western hero.

The adopted son of Dunson is played by Bruce Boxleitner. He's a major character in the story's conflict because he opposes Dunson's strict leadership style.

Boxleitner is well-known for his work in Western and science fiction films. He became well-known for playing Captain John Sheridan in Babylon 5 (1994–1998). As the main character in the television series Scarecrow and Mrs. King (1983–1987). He's well-known for the 1982 film Tron and its follow-up.


Gregory Harrison as Cherry Valance in Red River

Cherry Valance is portrayed by Gregory Harrison. He's a likable and accomplished gunman who joins the cattle drive. He has a complex bond with Dunson and Garth.

Harrison is most known for playing Trapper John, M.D.'s Dr. George Alonzo "Gonzo" Gates (1979–1986). Moreover, he starred in several television films and programs, like Reckless (2014), Falcon Crest (1989–1990) and Logan's Run (1977–1978).

Nadine Groot is portrayed by Stan Shaw. He's a devoted and knowledgeable cattleman who walks behind Dunson the entire way.

Shaw is renowned for his versatility in both television and movies. He starred in films like Harlem Nights (1989), The Boys in Company C (1978) and Rocky (1976). Shaw has acted in television shows like Fried Green Tomatoes and Roots: The Next Generations as well.

Ty Hardin plays Rance. He's a cowboy who participates in the cattle drive which heightens the character dynamics.

Hardin is most remembered for playing Bronco Layne in the television series Bronco (1958–1962). His appearances in Westerns like Cheyenne and Maverick helped him gain popularity. Moreover, Hardin acted in movies like Battle of the Bulge (1965) and PT 109 (1963).

Melville is played by Ray Walston. He plays a supporting role that adds to the plot through his interactions with the main characters.

Walston is well recognized for his portrayal of the alien Uncle Martin in the television series My Favorite Martian (1963–1966). Moreover, he played Mr. Hand in Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982) and appeared in the musical picture Damn Yankees (1958). He worked for more than 50 years.
