Scream 7 is the seventh installment of the popular slasher film franchise, that previously starred Courteney Cox, David Arquette, and Neve Campbell in important roles.

Scream, the first film in the series, was released on December 20, 1996. It became a huge success at the box office and was the highest-grossing slasher film in the world for nearly 20 years, until the release of Halloween in 2018.

The murder mystery film was turned into a popular franchise, comprising six films. The first four films were directed by Wes Craven. The fifth and sixth films were directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin & Tyler Gillett and released in 2022 and 2023 respectively.

Scream 7 gets a release date in early 2026

On October 1, 2024, actress Neve Campbell announced on Instagram that Scream 7 is scheduled to release on February 27, 2026. Neve will reprise her role as Sidney Prescott and play a leading role in the upcoming movie.

She has been a part of the film's original cast and has starred in the first five films of the popular franchise. However, she was noticeably absent from Scream VI due to a pay dispute.

As of early October 2024, Neve is the only confirmed cast member of Scream 7. She spoke about returning to her iconic role in an exclusive interview with Entertainment Tonight on July 30, 2024:

"We are going to follow Sidney. They did pitch the concept to me, and it’s the reason that I jumped on board. The fandom is nuts, they are incredible and very passionate about these films. I'm excited to give them a new one!"

Scream 7 initially had a different cast and crew in mind

Scream 7 went through a massive overhaul even before it began production. Initial plans for the movie included bringing back the main cast of the previous two films. Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega were set to reprise their roles as Sam and Tara Carpenter respectively. However, Melissa was fired in November 2023 after she made controversial remarks about the Israel-Hamas attacks.

Jenna Ortega also left the project after her demands for a substantial pay raise were denied. Moreover, it's unclear if Jasmin Savoy Brown and Mason Gooding will be a part of Scream 7. They played Mindy Meeks-Martin and Chad Meeks-Martin respectively in Scream (2022) and Scream VI.

Christopher Landon was initially roped in to direct the film, but he also quit in December 2023.

Who else is returning for Scream 7?

The Friends alum Courteney Cox, who played reporter Gale Weathers in the film series, is in the talks to star in Scream 7. She revealed to Variety in September 2024, that she had not signed for the film as of then. But, considering that she is the only cast member to feature in every Scream movie since its beginning, it's very unlikely that she will not return for the seventh time as well.

Another cast member rumored to return is Patrick Dempsey. He played Detective Mark Kincaid in Scream 3 in 2000, almost 25 years ago. In Scream (2022), Mark was revealed to be Sidney's husband and father to their three children. So, there's a high possibility he could return. However, it has not been confirmed yet.

Kevin Williamson is set to direct the latest film

The Scream franchise's latest offering is set to begin filming in December 2024 in Atlanta. The movie will be directed by Kevin Williamson, who served as the writer for Scream, Scream 2, and Scream 4. Moreover, he was the producer for Scream 3 and executive producer for Scream (2022) and Scream VI.

Scream 7 will be the first time that Williamson steps into the director's role for a Scream movie. His only other directing credit is Teaching Mrs. Tingle, which was released 25 years ago in 1999.

The screenplay for the upcoming film is written by Guy Busick, who co-wrote the screenplays for Scream (2022) and Scream VI along with James Vanderbilt.
