Sector 36 leaves viewers with shock by the end of its runtime as Inspector Ram Charan Pandey is brutally killed after he uncovers the truth behind the murders. The corrupt officials get promoted and the rich businessman Balbir Singh Bassi is free. Only Prem Singh is arrested for an organized human trafficking crime ring.
The horrors in the film aren't generated from the actions of one evil man, as most of the serial killer stories go. Instead, the real horror comes from the raw depiction of the rich-poor divide, and the corrupt system.
The Netflix film is based on the 2006 Noida serial killings, also referred to as Nithari Killings. It is directed by Aditya Nimbalkar. The screenplay is penned by Bodhayan Roychaudhury, who crafts an engaging and unconventional crime thriller. Dinesh Vijan and Jyoti Deshpande have produced the film, which stars Deepak Dobriyal and Vikrant Massey in the lead roles.
How does Balbir Singh Bassi secure bail in Sector 36?
Balbir Singh Bassi (Akash Khurana), is a wealthy businessman, whose house becomes the house of horrors within which heinous crimes are committed by him and his servant Prem Singh, played by Vikrant Massey.
After the discovery of missing children's remains, Balbir gets arrested along with Prem, who confesses to murder, necrophilia, cannibalism, and organ trade. It is insinuated in the film that Bassi's involvement in these crimes ran deeper than Prem, as it is through his money and connection that Prem and others did the unspeakable things. Bassi himself is shown as a pervert and potentially a pedophile.
The truth begins to unravel after Prem's confession. As the crimes occurred within Bassi's residence, suspicions arise about his potential involvement and he gets arrested. However, Bassi leverages his influential connections, including a close relationship with the Home Minister and the DGP. Thus, he manages to secure bail in no time, evading accountability for his suspected role in the atrocities.
Inspector Ram Charan Pandey is killed in Sector 36
Inspector Ram Charan Pandey, played by Deepak Dobriyal in Sector 36, initially was a corrupt and apathetic cop but is shaken to his core when his own child is almost kidnapped. This personal incident sparks a transformation, and he becomes determined to track down the culprit.
As Ram delves deeper into the case, he finally gathers crucial evidence and apprehends Prem. He uses the latter's emotional weakness to his advantage, which viewers can see through glimpses of Prem’s vulnerability in his interactions with his wife and his obsessive clinging to reality shows as an escape.
However, Ram's subordinate, driven by greed and ambition, betrays him. He informs the DGP about Ram's lead in the case and helps in getting the witness killed. This betrayal ultimately leads to Ram's tragic death at the hands of Balbir's henchmen.
Sector 36 ends with a glimpse of hope
Just when all hope seems lost and the story appears to end in tragedy, a surprising twist emerges. Despite the destruction of crucial evidence by Balbir's henchmen, a mysterious box suddenly appears at the door of Ram's subordinate, Constable Bishnoi. The box contains a disk with the same key proof that Ram got from Prem's house.
However, it is still unknown from whom he has got all this evidence leaving the audience wondering. Sector 36 leaves viewers with an ending that is dark and horrific, as it reminds us that the real killers of this inhuman organized crime are still out there. It also gives hope that justice may still prevail, and that the real truth could yet come to light.
