On Sunday, July 28, American stand-up comedian and actress Tiffany Haddish posted a video of herself visiting a grocery store in Harare, Zimbabwe. However, her surprised and comical reaction to finding a Pick & Pay supermarket has now garnered severe traction online.
“Hey, y’all. I am out here in Harare, Zimbabwe, and look at the grocery store. They got a grocery store. It’s beautiful. It’s beautiful. It’s a grocery store,” she began her clip in a caricatured voice.
Tiffany Haddish then moved on to give a tour of the store, show all the different kinds of merchandizes, and appeared impressed by its vastness and variety. She started with the fruits section and showed the packaged organic strawberries, sugarcanes, dates, and more.
The Here Today actress shared her amazement over the prices of the items, calling them both “different” and “expensive.” She also called the space “huge” and “absolutely humongous” before adding:
“Believe it. Believe it. Believe it. In Africa, baby. Zimbabwe.”
At one point in the video, the 44-year-old further added in a sarcastic tone how she liked to “demystify” things, and then went around to show the frozen section, the alcohol department, mentioning that “unlike the grocery stores at home, they actually sell dishes.”
In the wake of her now-viral video, the internet is having diverse reactions. For instance, Instagram user @ulfiltered.s*g wrote in the comment section of The Neighborhood Talk’s repost of the clip how Tiffany Haddish just “canceled” herself by sharing this video.
“She don’t need nobody to cancel her, she canceled herself,” the person wrote.
Several others joined in the conversation on X as well. Some assumed that she was just trying to make a “joke.”
“She is Eritrean, so I assume this is her trying to be funny,” one individual wrote.
“The lack of respect some Black Americans show toward Africa is quite disheartening. I hope she’s just joking,” another individual wrote.
“I sincerely hope that she is just making a joke,” an individual wrote.
Others called the video and Tiffany Haddish’s idea of Africa “embarrassing” and slammed her ignorance.
“It is not only embarrassing but disappointing. In 2024, a renowned American actress was surprised to see a standard grocery store in an African country,” a netizen wrote.
“This is just embarrassing. She has just certified that she’s a clueless woman, how can you be so successful and so dumb at the same time?” another netizen asked.
“I’m too confused on whether to laugh or feel sorry for her. It would be good to get @TiffanyHaddish to explain why she was surprised in seeing a grocery store in our beloved country. It’s not like we get our food through scavenging or hunting & gathering,” one netizen wrote.
Meanwhile, some pointed out that Haddish was simply trying to break stereotypes about the African culture and defended her.
“Honestly, looks like she was doing the opposite. Trying to show the world that they’re not just chasing lions in Africa. Looks like she was trying to stop stereotypes and was excited,” a person wrote.
“Is she insulting? Or just educating? It's a matter of perspective. She's not making jokes but she is dismissing many stereotypes. It's all perspective. Some of y'all already don't like her so y'all jumped on this with hate,” one person wrote.
“She straight up says she’s ‘demystifying’ meaning she’s dispelling the lies and negative stereotypes people have about African countries,” another person wrote.
