As the curse is not going away anytime soon, Parker Finn is returning with Smile 2, which will star Naomi Scott as the lead. The film is a sequel to the 2022 film, and it will focus on Sky Riley, a pop singer who begins to experience psychologically tormenting events around her during her tour.

Smile 2 was green-lit by Paramount in April 2023 at Cinemacon, and it was also disclosed that the sequel also entered the pre-production stage. The previous month, Finn signed a first-look deal with the production house for multiple horror projects, most of which are yet to be made public. Follow along with the article to learn more.

Paramount Pictures confirmed that Smile 2 will be released on October 18, 2024. The movie was filmed mostly in New York’s Hudson Valley, and other major locations include Poughkeepsie, Wappingers Falls, Newburg, and Albany.

While the sequel will see an entirely new cast lineup, Kyle Gallner is the only one to reprise his role as Joel from the first film. In an interview with Den of Geek, Finn shed light on the plot holes in the previous film, which left the audience confused about the entity and other things that needed answers.

After acknowledging the narrative inconsistency, Finn surprisingly revealed that it was done purposefully, hinting at deep layers and hidden clues that will unravel in the second film, or beyond.

Here’s what Finn had to say:

“There are a lot of stones that are purposely left unturned in the film. I always find myself way more afraid of the unknown than something that’s easily defined or put into a box.

He further said:

I also think that thematically, it matched what it’s potentially like to have this feeling that your mind is turning against you, that you’re losing agency, because something is coming after you even though you can’t quite describe what it is to other people. That felt right to me.”

After being asked about how the mystery of the demonic entity makes things more terrifying, Finn stated:

“Certainly, I’ve got theories and ideas behind this thing. But what I really love is its elusive nature… Rose almost feels like she’s the butt of a giant, really mean-spirited cosmic joke. That felt relatable and frightening, versus somebody conjuring some spell out of a book from the 1400s or something like that.”

Cast and characters in the sequel

Below is the list of all major cast and their characters in the sequel:

  • Naomi Scott as Skye Riley
  • Kyle Gallner as Joel
  • Lukas Gage as Lewis
  • Peter Jacobson as Morris
  • Rosemarie DeWitt
  • Dylan Gelula
  • Raúl Castillo
  • Miles Gutierrez-Riley

Where to watch Smile 2

Smile 2 will be having a theatrical release in the U.S., distributed by Paramount Pictures nationwide. The global release of the film is yet to be revealed.

Since it takes a long time for a film to land on an OTT platform, the sequel still has plenty of time to arrive on a streamer. Given Paramount Pictures is the distribution partner, the film is likely to be added to the catalog of Paramount+.
