Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Everything we know so far

On December 19, 2024, Variety exclusively reported that Paramount Studios has greenlit Sonic the Hedgehog 4 with the release date tentatively set for spring 2027.

Adapted from the 1990s video game series of the same name, the latest film titled Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was released on December 20, 2024. It has received extremely positive reviews, and currently holds an 85% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie seems headed for a spectacular box office performance, like the previous two films.

The first film Sonic the Hedgehog grossed $320 million worldwide, while its sequel Sonic the Hedgehog 2 collected over $405 million at the box office, as per Box Office Mojo. The two films have collectively earned over $725 million in global box office collections.

Who will return for Sonic the Hedgehog 4?

Actor Ben Schwartz, who plays the titular character in the film series, also shared the news regarding Sonic the Hedgehog 4 with his followers on X, soon after Variety reported the same. It must be noted that other relevant information, except its release date, are kept under wraps for the time being.

Jeff Fowler, who has helmed all the films in the franchise, will likely return for the fourth film as well. The main trio of Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles are also locked in to reprise their roles for future projects. Their adoptive human parents, Tom Wachowski (played by James Marsden), and Maddie Wachowski (Tika Sumpter) can also be expected to appear in Sonic the Hedgehog 4.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 features mid-credits and post-credits scenes that set the stage for Sonic 4. It also introduces the character of Amy Rose, who will certainly have a prominent role in the sequel.

The mid-credits scene showcases Sonic getting attacked by an army of robotic Sonics only to be saved by Amy Rose and her hammer. Sonic the Hedgehog 4 will likely center around the main trio and Amy Rose fighting off the mysterious robotic impersonators while trying to uncover who created them and for what purpose.

As per the video games, Amy Rose can serve as a potential romantic interest for Sonic. Her inclusion in the group can change the dynamic of the original trio in unexpected ways, which can be explored in Sonic the Hedgehog 4.

Moreover, Shadow has been revealed to be alive in the post-credits scene and so, he can likely return for the next chapter. It's hard to know if Jim Carrey will return for yet another film as Gerald and Ivo Robotnik as he came out of retirement to portray the film's antagonist. Fans already know that at the end of Sonic 3, Gerald dies but Ivo's fate remains unclear.
