The Bear Lake Murders is a Lifetime crime thriller that premiered on January 12, 2025, at 8/7c. The story follows a local sheriff who teams up with a burnt-out big-city detective to solve a string of mysterious deaths in a resort town. As the investigation progresses, they start to suspect that a serial killer may be hiding among the locals and tourists.

The screenplay for The Bear Lake Murders was written by Ken Miyamoto and directed by Danny J. Boyle, who also directed the Lifetime movie Baby Monitor Murders (2020). Boyle received a nomination for Best Direction in a Television Movie at the 2021 Leo Awards for his work on that film.

The Bear Lake Murders was produced by CMW Horizon Productions and distributed by Champlain Media in Canada and Lifetime Television in the US. The film stars Mercedes de la Zerda as Detective Ally Foster and Tom Stevens as Sheriff Roy Martin, alongside an ensemble cast that includes Blake Williams, Magalie, Tavia Cervi, Chris Fassbender, and others.

Cast and characters of The Bear Lake Murders

1) Mercedes de la Zerda as Detective Ally Foster

In The Bear Lake Murders, Mercedes de la Zerda plays Detective Ally Foster, a seasoned city investigator called in to help solve a series of mysterious deaths that have been terrorizing the quaint lakeside town. Although her character is experienced, she is worn down by years of dealing with tough cases in the city.

Foster deals with personal struggles or unresolved issues from her past. She brings new light to the case, though sometimes her ways clash with the local sheriff, Roy Martin, played by Tom Stevens. The dynamic between Foster and Martin is central to the story.

Mercedes de la Zerda was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, and began her acting career at 15. She is best known for her roles in John Tucker Must Die (2006), Radio Rebel (2012), and Hemlock Grove (2013).

She is of mixed heritage, with a Bolivian father and a mother of Guatemalan and Swedish descent. One of her early roles includes portraying one of the "Lennox House/Brothel Girls" in Sucker Punch.

2) Tom Stevens as Roy Martin

In The Bear Lake Murders, Tom Stevens plays Chief Roy Martin, the newly appointed head of police in the small town of Bear Lake. During an interview with Survived the Shows on January 7, 2025, Stevens discussed his character, noting that although Roy has been a police officer for many years, he is still adjusting to his new role as chief, a position he inherited after his father’s passing.

"I wouldn't call him(Roy Martin) the best police officer he's not like one of those, like traditional, like really solid cops," Tom Stevens on Survived the Shows.

Roy is not portrayed as a particularly traditional or seasoned officer, his struggle with the job suggests that he may have been thrust into this role rather than having chosen it willingly. He is also dealing with personal loss. His sister has returned to town after the death of their parents and is staying with him, adding to the complexity of his life.

Tom Stevens was born June 24, 1987, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He is the son of visual artist David Stevens and writer Diane Stevens. He began his acting career in high school plays but initially stepped away from the craft due to nerves during his theater school audition.

After working various jobs in the service sector, Stevens returned to acting by enrolling in the theater program at Douglas College, where he graduated in 2009. He has received critical acclaim for his roles, earning multiple Leo Award nominations, including a win for Best Guest Performance in a Dramatic Series for Wayward Pines (2016).

3) Magalie as Rebecca Martin

In The Bear Lake Murders, Magalie portrays Rebecca Martin, the sister of Roy Martin. Rebecca returns to Bear Lake from the school she was attending following the death of their parents. Her character adds a fun angle against the stoic character of Roy when she moves back into the family home.

"I feel the relationship with Rebecca, his sister, yeah, was probably something that we worked on, me and Magalie, who played my sister. We really like found this sibling dynamic and that brought a lot of color to him that was not necessarily on the page. That was something that we co-created," Tom Stevens remarked on Survived the Shows.

While Roy grapples with his responsibilities as the new police chief and the loss of their parents, Rebecca's return complicates things, as both siblings adjust to life after their parents' passing. Her character helps to explore Roy’s struggles and adds a layer of family tension to the narrative.

Magalie Rouillard-Bazinet, known for her work in Slant (2024), Residents of Arcadia (2023), A Million Little Things (2022), and Riverdale (2022), is a versatile actress and filmmaker.

She has earned recognition for her performances, including awards such as the LAFA September Award for Best Ensemble and a Special Mention for Team Performance at the Five Continents International Film Festival for Depth of Pyaar (2019).

In addition to acting, Magalie runs her self-tape and acting studio, Artéfakt, where she produces, writes, and directs her films. She also coaches professional actors, offering on-camera classes and audition guidance.
