The Convert is a film based on the true story of the Maori community in Epworth, New Zealand. The movie premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 7, 2023. After its debut at the film festival, it was released in theaters in New Zealand and Australia on March 14, 2024.

Directed by Lee Tamahori and produced by Jump Film & Television and Brouhaha Entertainment, The Convert is written by Shame Danielsen and Tamahori, inspired by a story by Michael Bennett. Set in the 1830s in Aotearoa, New Zealand, the film follows Thomas Murno, a British lay preacher who gets stuck in a tribal war between the Maori and the Akatarewa group.

As per IMDb, the official synopsis of the movie reads:

"A lay preacher's violent past is drawn into question and his faith tested as he becomes caught up in a bloody war between Maori tribes after arriving at a British settlement in the 1830s."

2) Tioreore Ngatai-Melbourne as Rangimai

Tioreore Ngatai-Melbourne plays the role of Rangimai, the daughter of the Maori tribal leader. She is saved by Munro during a face-off between the Maori and the Akatarewa group.

Tioreore Ngatai-Melbourne is an actress, director, and writer from New Zealand. She is known for her roles in Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016), Cousins (2021), and The Convert (2023), for which she was named a Rising Star at the Toronto International Film Festival.

3) Antonio Te Maioha as Maianui

Antonio Te Maioha plays the role of Chief Maianui, the leader of the Maori group. He wants to take revenge on Akatarewa, the ruthless leader of another group within the same tribe.

Antonio Te Maioha is an actor from New Zealand. He is known for his roles as a gladiator Barca, the Beast of Carthage, in the television drama Spartacus: Blood and Sand and its prequel. Spartacus: Gods of the Arena.

4) Jacqueline McKenzie as Charlotte

Jacqueline Susan McKenzie plays the role of Charlotte in The Convert for a brief period. She is a British woman and a translator who shares a romantic relationship with Munro.
