The latest exorcism thriller, The Deliverance, which the Oscar-nominated Lee Daniels directed, is coming to movie theaters on August 16 and Netflix late in the month.
The story is loosely inspired by the Ammons haunting case in Indiana. It follows a struggling single mother who moved her family into a new home to give everyone a fresh start. But instead of a new beginning for everyone, it becomes a nightmare as a series of demonic activities happen that make them realize that their new home could be a portal to hell.
It is a reunion project of Daniels and Andra Day, who previously worked together in The United States vs. Billie Holiday, which earned Day an Oscar nod for Best Actress.
When does The Deliverance release?
The Deliverance will debut in select movie theaters on August 16 and will be available for streaming on Netflix starting August 30. The film will be exclusively available on the streaming platform. It won't be available to watch anywhere else once its theatrical release window ends.
It marks the final movie in the streaming giant's summer movie collection, which included Hit Man, Atlas, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, Unfrosted, A Family Affair, and The Union.
What is The Deliverance all about?
The movie is a loose adaptation of the demonic possession that haunted Gary, Indiana, in 2011, specifically the Ammons Haunting, which became a nationwide sensation and involved the Gary police department and child protective services.
However, the movie is set in Pennsylvania, where single mother Ebony and her family moved in hopes of having a fresh start after facing many challenges. However, strange events started happening in their new home that soon disrupted their peace, and supernatural threats made the family and the community believe that their new home was a real hellhole.
Soon after, Child Protective Services gets involved, threatening Emoby's family life further. Soon, she's forced to fight to keep her family together while also keeping their souls safe from demonic threats.

A glimpse into the trailer of The Deliverance
The Deliverance official trailer, which Netflix released a month earlier than its theatrical release on July 16, runs over a minute long and is packed with chilling scenes of exorcism.
It begins with a tense scene where Aunjanue Ellis' character as the Reverand is helping prepare Andra Day to start on the exorcism of her kid, warning her not to listen to the voices from her kid during the process. The voices will manipulate her thoughts and emotions, so she has to tune them out. The scene continues with one of her children getting possessed and starting to growl, and then Reverand tells her to stand back.
The trailer continues with a montage of the exorcism, her kids getting possessed, the preacher giving a sermon, and ends with the line that says, "You shall be saved."
