Produced by Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation, The Emoji Movie was released in theatres across the United States on July 28, 2017. Before arriving in theatres, the movie premiered at the prestigious Regency Village Theatre on July 23, 2017.

The American animated comedy film featured characters voiced by some of the most well-known artists in the industry. These included T.J. Miller (Gene Meh), James Corden (Hi-5), Maya Rudolph (Smiler), Anna Faris (Jailbreak), and Steven Wright (Mel Meh).

The script for The Emoji Movie was written by Tony Leondis, Eric Siegel, and Mike White, based on a story by Tony Leondis and Eric Siegel. It was directed by Tony Leondis.

T.J. Miller lends his voice to Gene Meh's character in The Emoji Movie, one of the movie's central characters. Gene Meh is an outcast emoji capable of showing multiple expressions, setting him apart from the other insider emojis.

T.J. Miller is best known for being part of projects such as She's Out of My League (2010), How to Train Your Dragon (2010, 2014), and Big Hero 6 (2014).

2) James Corden as Hi-5

James Corden lends his voice to Hi-5 in the movie, resembling the High Five hand emoji that is commonly used. Like Gene Meh, Hi-5 is also one of the main protagonists of the movie and also Gene's best friend.

Besides hosting The Late Late Show with James Corden, some of the projects James Corden has been associated with in the past include Gavin & Stacey (2007-2010), Peter Rabbit (2018), and Cats (2019).

3) Maya Rudolph as Smiler

Maya Rudolph voices Smiler's character in The Emoji Movie. Her character resembles the smiling emoji that is commonly used. As one of the original emojis, Smiler is the main antagonist in the film.

Best known for her association with Saturday Night Live, Maya Rudolph has several credits under her name. These include Up All Night (2011–2012), Bridesmaids (2011), and The Good Place (2018–2020).

4) Anna Faris as Jailbreak

Anna Faris voices Jailbreak, a hacker emoji who later turns out to be a princess emoji named Linda. Although Jailbreak and Gene initially start as friends their relationship soon turns romantic, leading them to become each others' boyfriend and girlfriend.

Anna Faris is best known for her contributions to projects such as Scary Movie (2000-2006), The House Bunny (2008), and Mom (2013–2020).

5) Steven Wright as Mel Meh

Steven Wright lends his voice to Mel Meh's character in the movie. He is Gene's father, who is later revealed to have the same traits as his son. This allows him to have multiple expressions.
