The Goonies is a cult-classic 1985 film directed by Richard Donner that is fondly remembered to this day. The story follows a group of kids who live in a neighborhood called the "Goon Docks" in Astoria, Oregon.

When their home is in danger of being foreclosed, they seek out the legendary pirate treasure of One-Eyed Willy to find a way out of their predicament. The film was primarily shot in Oregon, where the story is set. The filming locations have become tourist destinations for fans.

Here are the filming locations for the movie, from the family house that the kids are trying to save to the Clatsop County Jail, which was the setting of the iconic jailbreak scene.

The movie featured a variety of locations, such as the house that the titular "Goonies" want to save from foreclosure, the jailhouse where Jake Fratelli broke out, and the pirate cave where One-Eyed Willy's ship was stationed.

The jailbreak scene was filmed at the Clatsop County Jail for both interior and exterior shots. In 2010, on the 25th anniversary of the film, the building was repurposed into the Oregon Film Museum. The museum houses memorabilia from The Goonies as well as other films shot in Oregon, such as Kindergarten Cop, The Shining, Free Willy, and Twilight.

The museum where Mikey's father works is an actual museum known as the Captain George Flavel House Museum, which was originally built by the titular Captain George Flavel in 1885.

Other locations include the Warren Field where the opening scene was set and which has since been converted to a building, Haystack Rock, Cannon Beach where the truck rally was shot, and Goat Rock Beach in Sonoma County California, where the final scene was filmed.

Where is the house from The Goonies located?

The Walsh house, which the Goonies are trying to save from foreclosure, is an actual private residence located at 368, 38th Street in Astoria, Oregon.

While it did become a tourist destination following the release of the film, The Daily Astorian reported in 2015 that the house had been closed off due to difficulties faced by the owner.

However, in 2023, The Seattle Times reported that the house is being sold to a new owner, who's a big fan of the movie and wants to open it back up to visitors.

The scene where the Goonies discover One-Eyed Willy's ship was not filmed at an actual cave, but a film set. Specifically, Stage 16 in the Warner Bros Studios complex in Burbank, California.

Stage 16 is one of the largest sound stages in film production today, with an area of over 32,000 square feet. Production designer J. Michael Riva made the bold decision to construct a full pirate ship replica within this set.

According to director Richard Donner:

"Michael had it in his mind, no matter what, that he was going to build a full-scale pirate ship."
"That was it, and Michael was the kind of guy that wore blinders and delivered the best of the best," he added.

The Goonies is among the most memorable Hollywood releases of the '80s, to the point that it was shortlisted for preservation by the Library of Congress in 2017. The filming locations and the sound stage used to bring this story to life remain iconic tourist destinations even now.
