HBO has acquired the rights to The Great Lillian Hall, starring the phenomenal Jessica Lange in the lead role, and the movie is making its debut at the end of this month on HBO.

The movie follows the dramatic story of a legendary theatre performer Lillian Hall who might lose everything in the final stage of her career. Throughout her life she has built a trajectory for herself that earned her the title of "First Lady of American Theater," and she is looking forward to delivering one of the most important performances of her life and delighting audiences once again with her undeniable talent.

However, everything will change for her overnight when the phenomenal actor is diagnosed with a severe neurological condition that makes it impossible for her to successfully carry out her role. Read on to learn more about the upcoming movie.


The Great Lillian Hall will be released on May 31, 2024

The Great Lillian Hall was originally intended for a theatrical release. However, it will now premiere on HBO on Friday, May 31, 2024, which is the day before the 2024 Emmy eligibility window closes. The film will air on HBO at 8 pm ET/PT. It will also be available for streaming on Max, which is the HBO streaming platform.

Viewers can also catch the movie later on the streaming site with a subscription to the platform. Max subscription plans start at $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year with ads. The ad-free plan is priced at $15.99 per month or $149.99 per year, and the 'Ultimate Ad-Free' plan comes at $19.99 per month or $199.99 per year.

The Great Lillian Hall was originally supposed to have been shot in New York City. However, the production was later shifted to Georgia which served as the primary location for filming.

The filming was wrapped up by June 2023 following which the movie underwent a significant transformation. It was initially named Places, Please and later renamed as The Great Lillian Hall.


Cast and characters explored

The three-time Emmy and two-time Oscar-winning Jessica Lange will be leading the cast of The Great Lillian Hall as the titular character. Lange is a critically acclaimed actor known for her versatile performances in film, television, and theater.

Lange gained recognition for her roles in King Kong (1976), Tootsie (1982), and Blue Sky (1994), for which she won the Academy Award for Best Actress. Her television credits include American Horror Story and Feud.

She is joined by the following actors in other supporting roles in the movie:

HBO has released a trailer for the upcoming drama and we see the video opens with phenomenal theater actor Lillian Hall as she rehearses for her latest play. However, Lillian seems to struggle to remember her lines and she is soon diagnosed with a neurological disease, which means that she will fail to remember her lines or speak properly as time passes. The people around her are deeply worried and the looming question is will she be able to pull off her play and what does this mean for her career and her life?

The official plot synopsis for the movie reads,

"As beloved Broadway star Lillian Hall (Jessica Lange) pours her heart, soul, and time into preparing for her next role, she finds herself blindsided by confusion and forgetfulness. Battling against all odds to make it to opening night while holding on to her fading memories and identity, she must navigate a tumultuous emotional journey: balancing her desire for the spotlight and the stark demands of the real world."

The movie has been directed by Michael Cristofer and written by Elisabeth Seldes Annacone. It is produced by Bruce Cohen, Steven Rogers, Scott Thigpen, and Marie Halliday, with executive producers, Tom Cappello, Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates, Michael Cristofer, and Alex Platis on board. Co-producers include George Scarles, and Jessica Fox-Thigpen.
