The Inheritance (2024) Ending Explained
Cami is the first Abernathy to go down
The Inheritance begins with a family reunion. Hannah, Drew's wife, is not welcomed by the twins but she insists on staying and safeguarding Charles Abernathy from whatever sinister happenings take place. At the family gathering, Charles reveals that something is going to kill him tonight. He needs his children to protect him from dying or they will not get their share of the inheritance.
Drew doesn’t seem to care much about money but CJ and Madeleine, the twins are the complete opposites. As the clock strikes and all the guards leave, the house gets locked from the inside and will not open until tomorrow morning. Charles goes up to the study.
Cami is the first character in the film who goes down. She sees something eerie in the wine cellar downstairs and later while she is all by herself next to the pool, she witnesses a shadow. She gets creeped out and starts checking the video that she had captured a while back, thinking it might tell her what the shadow is. But the very next moment, the evil drowns her in the pool.
When her siblings find her, the pool is filled with her blood. They manage to get her body out of the water. A mark appears on her forehead and she is dead. While everyone freaks out, Charles feels bad for a moment but tells his other children to protect him. Later in the film, Cami’s body disappears by the pool, and the evil possesses it.
CJ thinks Hannah and Drew are behind Cami’s murder. So he locks them both in the family vault, which has limited oxygen.
Madeleine goes down next
Madeleine is Charles' second child to die in The Inheritance. After Cami’s death, she goes to her room and reminisces. Her cousin joins her and while they both talk about what has just happened, Madeleine starts getting glimpses of the evil. Later in the film, as they go out of the room, hearing steps and knocks, something knocks Madeline down. CJ, who has a gun, tries to save her but the evil drags Madeleine.
Suddenly, Cami appears out of nowhere. But wait, it is not Cami! It is a demon, who has got a hold of Cami’s dead body. CJ tries to shoot the evil and right after he pulls the trigger, he realizes that he has killed Madeleine because the demon had fogged his mind.
The evil consumes CJ
Soon after the death of Madeleine in The Inheritance, CJ opens the vault and lets Drew and his wife out. He tells them how the demon has killed Madeleine.
Soon, Drew and his wife try to look for answers. They find a mysterious room, the key to which is Milton’s Paradise Lost. As they enter the room, they find a lot of sinister objects. They now know that their father has trapped them in this house and everything that is happening around them is connected to the occult and satanic rituals.
While they are in that room, they hear CJ scream. The evil drops CJ from the stairs and as he lies conscious on the ground floor, unable to move, the demon comes and sucks the life out of him. By the time Drew and his wife arrive, CJ is already dead.
Next, Drew is killed by Charles
When Drew and Hannah go to Charles and confront him about what they are dealing with, he tells them how he had sold his soul to a Mammon (a demon) in the past in exchange for all the wealth.
Charles who is now 75, wishes to live longer, and to do so, he has to sacrifice his whole bloodline so that he is the last of the Abernathys to live. In this way, Mammon won’t come and claim his soul.
He then takes out his revolver and shoots Drew. The fourth Abernathy goes down. Charles now wants to kill Hannah even though he doesn’t consider her as an Abernathy. He shoots Hannah and the bullet hits her hand. She is a minorly injured. Hannah soon hides in the house, to save her life.
The big revelation
The biggest part of the deal between Mammon and Charles Abernathy is that he has to sacrifice his whole bloodline so that he gets to live longer. However, Hannah who gets hold of the shotgun earlier used by CJ, shoots Charles. While Charles is on the ground, a piece of furniture falls on him and he is trapped.
Hannah then talks to him about how he and Drew brought a gift but never gave it to him. Hannah then opens the gift and shows an ultrasound image. Hannah is pregnant with Drew’s child. Hannah reveals this to Charles as he lays on the floor. The last of Abernathy’s is Hannah’s unborn child, which means Charles has to kill Hannah to seal the deal with Mammon. But it’s too late.
As the clock strikes, we get a glimpse of the demon Mammon. He crawls on Charles and consumes his soul on his 75th birthday. Hannah and the child leave the house as the sun shines and the doors unlock. She informs Charles' security that all of the Abernathys are dead. Hannah gets in her car and tells the driver to drive her home.
