Plot summary

At the start of The Last Showgirl, 57-year-old Shelly Gardner finds out that her Las Vegas show, Le Razzle Dazzle, is about to close in the next two weeks. The show's producer, Eddie, informs her that since ticket sales for the classic French-style revue have dropped recently, it will be replaced by a contemporary, neo-burlesque circus show.

Having worked on the show for the past 30 years, Shelly is heartbroken and faces an uncertain future with little to no job prospects and financial resources. She reluctantly auditions for another show but is rejected for being past her prime. Later, she breaks down over having dedicated her entire life to the cutthroat industry that favors youth and beauty over experience.

Her only confidant is Annette, a former showgirl who now works as a cocktail waitress. Struggling with a drinking problem and gambling addiction, Annette moves in with Shelly by the end of the film after failing to pay her house rent.

Moreover, Mary-Anne and Jodie, Shelly's much younger co-workers, see her as a motherly figure, but she rebuffs their attempts at bonding with her. She has an estranged relationship with her own daughter, Hannah, a photography student living in Tucson. In the weeks leading up to her final performance, Shelly reconnects with Hannah and tries to make up for lost time.

The film ends with Shelly performing on stage one last time before the curtains close on her career.
