What is the Pit?

Set in a nearby future, the Pit is an ultra-high-tech prison shaped like a concrete tower. The tower has hundreds of floors, with each cell hosting two prisoners. It has a Vertical Self-Management Center with only a large food tray to pass in the gap between each floor. The tray has enough food for all the prisoners, each dish chosen by them before turning themselves in.

The inmates residing on the upper stories, get to feast on all the delicacies, but as the tray goes down towards the Pit, the tray gets messier. This is where gluttony comes into the context. Prisoners residing on the top floors eat more than their share, resulting in a food shortage, that causes the people on the lowest floors to die of hunger, or worse, eat their cellmates.

The prison, in reality, is a mimicry of the Capitalist social system. People in the higher classes consume resources more than others, while the groups on the lower strata struggle for even the least. The Pit has a rotation system, where at the end of every month, the inmates are made unconscious and transferred to a random floor. So it completely depends on the fate of the cellmates, of whether they eat till their stomach are full or starve themselves to death.

What is the story of Perempuan in The Platform 2?

After Goreng, in the second installment, the director Gaztelu-Urrutia brings the character of Perempuan as the central protagonist. She is a guilt-ridden artist, who willingly enrolls herself into the Pit. Before her incarceration, she was a world-renowned artist. In her final exhibition, she displayed a series of artifacts relating to animal cruelty. She willingly didn't put any safety measures around her artifact, to make it more authentic.

Tragically her boyfriend's son accidentally tipped on one of the artifacts and got his eye pierced by the claws of a dog statue. She got cleared of all the legal offenses, but her guilt never left. The prison became a way for her to search for redemption. The story begins as Perempuan wakes up to find herself on the 24th floor. She finds her cellmate to be a shaved-headed giant who introduces himself as Zamiatin.

Zamiatin in the beginning portrays himself as a dumb shirtless man, with an immense hunger for Pizza, and an uncontrolled temper to shower, when he is not provided with it. His origins are rather ambiguous, but the interview scene before enrolling in the prison provides viewers with a slight idea of his backstory.

He explains that his parents have sent him to the Pit to build some discipline after he set the house on fire while they were sleeping. The audiences are provided with a slight impression that Zamiatin is maybe on the verge of insanity, with his initial behavior.

He had lost his family, and his kids, and even ended up losing his job. But as the movie progresses, Perempuan realizes that Zamiatin is smarter than he paints himself to be. He was a mathematician who had devoted his entire life to the pursuit of logic. But when he came to the question of the square root of minus one, he discovered mathematics considers it to be an imaginary number.

This marked a sharp dent in his existing beliefs, that science can answer all of the Universe's questions. The statement itself is an allegory that every question is not always answered. All the prisoners inside constantly wanted to know the authority working behind the Pit, but they were never answered.

Who are the Loyalists?

In The Platform 2, things are a lot different than in the initial film. The Pit is now governed by a set of prisoners who identify themselves as the Loyalists. Guided by a blind man Dagin Babi, who calls himself a prophet of The Master. As the myth goes, The Master was a man who laid some foundational laws for the prisoner to ensure that everyone gets their rightful share of food.

This set of rules called "The Law" should be followed by every prisoner to prevent mayhem, and anyone breaking the rules is sentenced to strict punishments. There is no concrete proof that the master existed or is even alive. A man named Robespierre informs Perempuan that the ones who have seen The Master are The Anointed Ones.

According to him, the master survived a month without eating, and the other month fed his flesh to the needy. The portrayal of The Master establishes a symbolism of Jesus Christ during The Last Supper. The Christian representation in the movie delves deeper when the audience realizes the lowest pit holds a unique representation by the director.

The lowest floor number is 333. and considering every cell has 2 inmates, the total number of captives equals 666, which is the Satanic number. The pit comes out to be a representation of Heaven, Earth, and Hell.

The Loyalists tried to make sure prisoners living in the lowest strata, received their rightful share, and this somewhere started to succeed. By the end of the month, the prisoners rejoice with the news that the food has reached up to the 175th floor.

The only people who are responsible for disrupting this chain are called Barbarians. Their punishments involve getting one armed cut-off, being tied to the food tray, and being left to be devoured by the hungry cannibals residing on the lowest floors.

Zamiatin couldn't resist his gluttony and was eating food from the tray of the dead ones. He knew the Loyalists would catch him sooner or later and punish them both for the crime. Additionally, he was partly dying from a terminal illness, so he decided to set himself on fire at the end of the month.

After Zamiatin is dead, Perempuan is shifted to floor 180, where no food ever reaches. She finds her roommate to be a one-armed woman, who disguises her identity as a newbie in the beginning.

Eventually, she reveals that she has been in the Pit for the last six months. The Loyalists, ordered by Dagin Babi cut off her arm when she was discovered feeding a starving man, with the food from a dead man's plate.

Her cellmate Kekasih was the one who gauged out Dagin Babi's eyes and as a punishment was tied to the food tray, to be eaten alive. Babi's ideology behind the dictatorship is that they kill to create a future where no one will have to kill anymore.

Starving with hunger and remorse, Perempuan and her cellmate Sahabat team up to kill a Barbarian who had broken the cycle. But despite trying to do good, they are punished by the Loyalists to take the law into their hands. Soon Perempuan's arm is chopped off, while her cellmate is tied to the food tray, for showcasing misdemeanour for the second time. This is the point when Perempuan decides to break away from the law and join the Barbarians.

What happens to Perempuan at the end of The Platform 2?

Perempuan decides to escape from the prison, and as directed by her deceased cellmate, the best time to do it is at the end of every cycle. Known as the interval, this is the time when the prison authorities arrive to clean all the cells. The inmates are made unconscious with a variant gas of sevoflurane. Perempuan must find something known as "the drowning dog" on the deepest floors to make her escape.

Perempuan ventures on her voyage to the darker world, where she in turn bonds with criminals to form a cult of her own, who are strictly against the loyalists. The Platform 2, right from that point catches intensity and reaches its climax when Perempuan encounters Tiramigasi.

The old man is showcased as a new prisoner in The Pit, which makes The Platform 2 a prequel to the initial movie. In The Platform, Goreng's cellmate was almost at the end of his year-long incarceration. This implies The Plaform 2 is set a year before the initial movie.

After a series of mayhem and a lot of bloodshed, Prempuan ends up finding "the drowning dog" in a painting. The painting showcased in the movie, in real is a painting named "The Dog" or "El Perro" done by the Spanish artist Francisco de Goya. The painting is a symbol of man's futile struggles against malicious forces.

In the fight between the Loyalists and Barbarians, no one survives except Perempuan and Tiramigasi, and his symbolic samurai plus sword. Now, with no governing authority, the Pit descends into the state of anarchy experienced by Goreng in the initial movie. Perempua discovers that the painting has a hallucinogenic substance, which provides her with a resistance to sevoflurane.

During the period of interval, Perempuan pretends to be dead and is packed with the rest of the corpses. She wakes up to find herself levitating in zero gravity, which implies that the Pit is constructed in space. The entire pit might be a scientific experiment with researchers observing how human behaviors tend to shape according to the situation.

Metaphorically, it is a way to bring out the cruel animal instincts residing inside human beings, like the one showcased in Perempuan's exhibition. The Pyramid Structure, with the children playing, is a great example of it. In the beginning, every child systematically took their turns on the slide. But as the sequence was broken down, it changed their human disposition. Eventually, it created a heap of chaos, with each child fighting their way to the top.

It is a symbolic representation of modern society in general, where every individual wants to climb the social ladder, stepping on other's shoulders. The viewers can also see the small child Mila, who becomes Goreng's final message in the initial movie. In The Platform 2, not Mila but another child manages to climb the top of the pyramid. A shining light appears, and he is sent to the bottom of the Pit, surprisingly by a woman resembling Miharu.

No concrete reason has been given for why the children are taken to the lowest floor of the pit. But the major theory suggests the child is the symbol of hope and redemption. Someone who has reached the lowest level of the Pit gets their final chance to send a message to the authorities, that humans are capable of reformation even at their their darkest stages.

At the end of The Platform 2, the viewers see Perempuan descending onto floor 333 and finding a child. From there the movie tends to repeat the cycle. Just like Goreng, Perempuan tries her best to save the child. Due to zero gravity, while climbing downwards, her body is fatally wounded multiple times, until she reaches the darkness of the Pit.

Upon reaching the darkness, Perempuan climbs off the food tray and lets the child reach the top. She sacrifices herself, saving the life of a child in a way to seek redemption for the one she unintentionally killed. At the end of The Platform 2, the audience realizes Perempuan didn't survive the fatal injuries when the spirits of the dead ones greet her, making her realize, that her journey is finally over.

As narrated by Trimigasi, we all are prisoners of our minds, which is almost impossible to escape. Perepuan's past was the actual prison that was incarcerating her. By redeeming herself, she found her concluding liberation.

In the post-credit scenes, the viewers find Perempuan reuniting with Goreng which in turn answers that Goreng was her ex-boyfriend whose son was killed. The Platform 2 concludes by creating a wormhole into the canvas of space and time, with lots of questions to ponder upon. With his second movie, Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia makes a statement that there could be potential movies of the franchise in the future.
