The Red Virgin (La Virgen Roja) was directed by Paula Ortiz and will be digitally released on December 5, 2024, exclusively on Amazon Prime. Ortiz was critically acclaimed for The Bride (2015), and she brought a visually nuanced direction to this psychological drama. The script was written by Clara Roquet and Eduard Sola.

The movie was theatrically released in Spain on September 27, 2024, and was produced by Maria Zamora under her Elastica Films and Avalon Production with backing from Amazon MGM Studios. The story is centered on Hildegart Rodriguez, a young intellectual from 1930s Spain, whose life her mother, Aurora, has taken complete control over.

As Hildegart began to seek her way, their strained relationship spiraled toward a tragic breaking point. Najwa Nimri stars in this 1930s dramatization of a true story, The Red Virgin. Nimri plays Aurora, a suffocating mother whose obsessiveness with her daughter Hildegart, a revolutionary feminist, sets off the tension in this movie. Her extreme possessiveness culminates tragically in such moments when she feels Hildegart slipping from her grasp, leading to a quite shocking violent action.

Najwa Nimri is famous for her roles in hits like Money Heist, playing Alicia Sierra, and Locked Up. She received several nominations for the Feroz Awards and the Goya Awards for her acting roles.


2) Alba Planas as Hildegart

Alba Planas plays Hildegart Rodríguez in The Red Virgin, a prodigy raised by her mother, Aurora, to become the most important feminist voice of 1930s Spain. As Hildegart ages, she demands freedom and rebels against her mother's repressive control with tragic consequences.

Alba Planas first earned recognition for her role as Eva Vázquez in the Spanish version of Skam España, where she was the main character for the first season and then continued through the series as a main cast member. Her acting in the short film 16 earned her the Best Actress Award presented by the Official Jury in the Ávilacine Film Festival.


3) Aixa Villagrán as Macarena

In The Red Virgin, Aixa Villagrán plays the role of Macarena, who witnesses the devastating relationship between Aurora and her daughter, Hildegart.

The character she played as Esther in the Spanish series Perfect Life, also known as Vida Perfecta, brought Aixa Villagrán critical acclaim. That role won her the Special Performance Prize at the 2019 Canneseries, together with co-stars Leticia Dolera and Celia Freijeiro. She was also nominated as Best Supporting Actress for the 7th Feroz Awards and the 29th Actors and Actresses Union Awards.

Villagrán is nominated for Best Supporting Actress in a Film for the 12th Feroz Awards for her performance in The Red Virgin.


4) Patrick Criado as Abel Vilella

Patrick Criado plays Abel Vilella in The Red Virgin, a Socialist activist who becomes romantically involved with Hildegart, helping her explore new emotions and challenge her mother's control. Criado is known for his role as Nuño de Santillana in Águila Roja, which brought him popularity at a young age.

He was nominated for a Goya Award for Best New Actor for his performance in La Gran Familia española. He won the Feroz Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Series for Riot Police and the Ondas Award for Best Actor for Las Noches de Tefía.


5) Pepe Viyuela as Eduardo de Guzmán

Pepe Viyuela plays the character of Eduardo de Guzmán in The Red Virgin. He is one of the major leads in the story. Being one of the most popular journalists and writers during the Second Spanish Republic, Guzmán used to do press reports and journalism when the Spanish Civil War had broken out.

Viyuela is probably one of the most famous actors in Spain due to his character Chema from the Spanish series Aída. It brought him an Ondas Award for Best Actor back in 2013. This particular role brought him numerous Spanish Actors Union Awards, such as Best Lead Actor in Television.

In 2024, the Aguilar Film Festival recognized all of his contributions to Spanish cinema and television by awarding him an Águila de Oro.

The Red Virgin will be premiering on Amazon Prime on December 5, 2024. The official synopsis on the platform reads:

"Based on a true story. By age 16, Hildegart was an expert on female sexuality and one of Spain’s brightest young minds in the 1930s, molded by her mother to be the ideal woman of the future. But when Hildegart begins to experience the world and rebel against those strict expectations, her mother will do everything possible to prevent her from breaking free."

The movie ranks 7.2/10 on IMDb and 3.5/5 on Sensacine, on EscribiendoCine, the rank goes up to 9/10 for this film. The movie tells the story of Hildegart Rodríguez, a young writer just coming onto the Spanish scene during the 1930s, being reared by her mother to be the perfect woman of the future. The real challenge for this attachment is independence in life.

This is a 1h 54min long film that received a fairly positive reception for telling a story and acting.
