The Electric State is the Russo brothers' upcoming science-fiction adventure comedy scheduled to release on Netflix in March 2025. Written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, the movie is based on a graphic novel of the same name created by Simon Stålenhag.
The Electric State will star multiple familiar faces, including Chris Pratt, Millie Bobby Brown, Giancarlo Esposito, Anthony Mackie, and Billy Bob Thornton. It will take viewers on a journey to a post-apocalyptic society where human beings have survived a brutal war against artificial intelligence. The movie will see robots as outcasts in society, confined to an ‘exclusion zone.’
The Electric State will be set in the 1990s, when humanity is attempting to rebuild itself, and will focus on Michelle, Millie Bobby Brown’s character. Michelle will go on a mission to find her missing brother, with the movie boasting the following official synopsis, according to IMDB:
“An orphaned teenager traverses the American West with a sweet, but mysterious, robot, and an eccentric drifter in search of her younger brother.”
The Electric State will not undergo a theatrical release and will be available on Netflix.
The Russo Brothers’ The Electric State promises a thrilling ride in post-apocalyptic Earth
The Electric State will feature a world on the edge of dystopia. While humanity struggles to rebuild itself, the machines will be seen rusting away in an exclusion zone. The movie will deal with themes of loss, technology, and family as Michelle embarks on a dangerous quest to find her brother.
Michelle will be helped by a remote-controlled bot resembling her brother’s favorite sci-fi hero, Kid Cosmo. The machine will be seen communicating using only the hero’s catchphrases but will single-handedly guide Michelle into dangerous territories. Along the way. She will be helped by Chris Pratt’s Keats, a war veteran/trucker, and Herman, another machine.
Herman, a construction machine surviving in the post-apocalyptic world by being a smuggler, will be voiced by Anthony Mackie. According to Vanity Fair, Mille Bobby Brown claimed the following about her character:
“She’s rebellious and dealing with grief, but she’s still human.”
Regardless, the Russo Brothers also appear excited about the upcoming project. According to Vanity Fair, The Electric State is set to delve into the ironic imbalance between human beings and machines:
“You can recognize humanity in technology, and you can recognize inhumanity in humans. This movie is actually a remarkable bridge for us back to that [superhero] world.”
Further, the movie is set to be the Russo Brothers’ final project before they reenter the MCU, this time alongside Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom.
In addition to the likes of Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt, a range of other superstars are set to feature in The Electric State. Woody Harrelson will be voicing Mr. Peanut, the leader of the exiled robots. Jenny Slate will be seen as Penny Pal, another robot, while Brian Coz is voicing Popfly, a baseball-pitching machine.
Finally, Ke Huy Quan will play Dr. Amherst, with Stanley Tucci playing Ethan Skate, a formerly successful tech entrepreneur. Jason Alexander is also set to appear in the movie.
Further, Joe Russo claimed the following about The Electric State:
“Humans are using technology to dehumanize themselves, and technology is striving to become human.”
A unique concept, to say the least, The Electric State has some of the industry’s biggest names behind it. It will be available to stream on Netflix in March 2025.
