Netflix's It's All Over: The Kiss That Changed Spanish Football: The scandalous action of a man which led to a social media revolution
It's All Over: The Kiss That Changed Spanish Football features interviews with key figures from the Spanish National Team to revisit the turbulent years leading up to the 2023 World Cup, the incredible success they had at the tournament, and also the unfortunate public actions of one man.
Following Spain's victory over England in the World Cup final, the former president of the Royal Spanish Football Association, Luis Rubiales, handed out winners medals to the players. While doing this, he appeared overtly affectionate with several players and it sparked outrage especially when he kissed Jennifer Hermoso on the lips without her consent.
In an Instagram livestream after the game, Hermoso confirmed that she was kissed without consent. Rubiales’ actions quickly made headlines all over the world, which eventually led to his dismissal. But he and his family continuously pushed back on the action. Rubiales refused to resign or take accountability for his inappropriate actions. His mother even threatened to fast until death over this issue.
It's All Over: The Kiss That Changed Spanish Football: A story of unity
Following the finals, an organic social media campaign, #SeAcabó, went viral in Spain, which was sparked by the controversial action by Rubiales. The phrase “Se acabó" means “It’s over” and was introduced by Alexia Putellas, one of the players in the game. She and other players announced that they would not return to the national team unless the leadership was changed.
The movement quickly caught on and the hashtag went viral and was used by several athletes around the world, the UN, and even the Spanish government. #SeAcabó was also used by non-athletes who wanted to show their solidarity with the movement and speak out publicly against harassment, abuse, and bullying.
Eventually, Luis Rubiales stepped down as president of Spain’s soccer federation and as vice president of the Union of European Football Associations’ executive committee. But he did so after claiming that he was a victim of “social assassination”. Rubiales was also given a three-year ban from the sport by FIFA.
