Although The Wild Robot debuted theatrically in the U.S. on September 27, 2024, the animated film has been the talk of the town since it premiered at the Toronto International Fim Festival on September 8.
The Wild Robot is based on the children’s picture book by Peter Brown, which was published on April 5, 2016. The film follows the titular robot named Roz who embraces wildlife on an uninhabited island and embarks on a heartwarming journey of self-discovery, friendship, parenthood, and survival.
With just a few days since its premiere, the film is already a soaring success having garnered a Fresh rating of 98% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 126 reviews, and acquiring the Verified Hot badge on the Popcornmeter.

Lupita Nyong'o as Roz
Roz, short for ROZZUM unit 7134 is the primary character in The Wild Robot, who is a utilitarian robot designed for practical tasks, like the rest of her unit. After a crash landing on an uninhabited island, Roz gets reactivated by local wildlife. Roz forms an emotional bond with a gosling named Brightbill, who she raises after accidentally destroying the nest.
As the story progresses, Roz becomes more than what she’s programmed for. In the movie Lupita Nyong’o voices Roz. The actress is also widely acclaimed for being the voice of Raksha in The Jungle Book 2016, and Maz Kanata in the Star Wars sequel trilogy 2015-2019.
Pedro Pascal as Fink
Pedro Pascal played the sly fox named Fink in The Wild Robot, who initially surfaced as a selfish predator, but soon became an ally to Roz. Over time, Fink develops a friendly bond with Roz, staying by her side and helping raise her adoptive gosling baby.
Having been known as one of the widely acclaimed versatile actors in the industry, Pascal is lauded for many of his performances, including his role as Din Djarin in Disney+’s The Mandalorian and Joel Miller in HBO’s The Last of Us.
Kit Connor as Brightbill
Brightbill is one of the primary characters in The Wild Robot who becomes a huge responsibility to Roz after she inadvertently destroys the baby gosling’s family nest. Imprinted on Roz as his mother, Brightbill shares a close bond with her, staying by her side 24/7. However, after learning about his family’s fate, he separates from Roz and joins a flock of geese.
Kit Connor, known for voicing Pantalaimon in His Dark Materials and playing the lead character Nick Nelson in Heartstopper, took on the role of Brightbill in the movie. Baby Brightbill was voiced by Boone Storme.
Catherine O'Hara as Pinktail
Catherine O’Hara has voiced Pinktail, the mother opossum in The Wild Robot, who becomes another ally to Roz as she navigates through her new life as a wildling. Alongside Roz and Fink, Pinktail contributes to the growth of Brightbill with her experience of motherhood.
When it comes to voice acting, O’Hara is not new to the craft as she lent her distinctive voice to numerous animated characters, including Aunt Edit in Rock & Rule, Mrs. Prysselius in Pippy Longstocking, and Brooke Ripple in Elemental.
Mark Hamill as Thorn
While initially Fink was taken as the cunning predator of the island in The Wild Robot, it was Thorn who posed a greater threat to Roz and the other animals. However, like everyone else, Thorn also becomes an ally to the robot, uniting with other fellow animals to fight as a family.
Mostly known for his iconic role as Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars franchise, Mark Hamill voiced Thorn in the movie. Hamill has been in the voice acting business since the 1970s.
He is known for voicing numerous characters, including The Hobgoblin in the 1990s animated Spider-Man series and DC’s Joker in many animated series and video game adaptations of Batman.
Bill Nighy as Longneck
Bill Nighy plays the wise elder goose Longneck, who serves as a mentor to both Roz and Brightbill in The Wild Robot, guiding them through the unanticipated challenges of the wilderness. Longneck also highlights the importance of community and sacrifice, which helps Roz understand how to keep the animals together in a state of danger.
As an established actor, Nighy is one of the respected individuals in the industry who has gained acclaim for several roles throughout his acting career. Besides his role as Longneck in The Wild Robot, Nighy is known for voicing Grandsanta in 2011's Arthur Christmas.
Stephanie Hsu as Vontra
Stephanie Hsu plays Vontra, the main antagonist in The Wild Robot who represents the corporate interests of Universal Dynamics. After learning about Roz’s whereabouts, Vontra gets fixated on the resolve to capture her, leading her into a battle she never anticipated coming her way.
Hsu gained fame globally after playing a dual role in Everything Everywhere All At Once, for which she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. She is also widely acclaimed for voicing various characters, including Golden Glider and Spoiler in Kite Man Hell Yeah!, Ise in Blue Eye Samurai, and Zhen in 2022’s Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight.
