Netflix's latest film, Mary, tells the stories of some of Christianity's most revered figures through an engaging narrative of faith and survival. The film is directed by D. J. Caruso from a screenplay by Timothy Michael Hayes, which focuses on Mary's birth and life.
The titular character was a gift from God to Joachim and Anne, but on the condition that she must be given away in the service of God. The film covers her journey from childhood to the birth of the prophesied savior Jesus Christ.
Her presence unsettles the tyrannical government of King Herod and he tries everything in his power to erase her existence, including killing hundreds of male newborns in Bethlehem.
The film, starring Noa Cohen, Anthony Hopkins, Ido Tako, Stephanie Nur, and Ori Pfeffer in prominent roles, is facing backlash online after its release on Netflix on December 6, 2024.

One viewer of X shared his opinion of the film:
"The Mary movie on Netflix is hot garbage. They should be ashamed of themselves for putting this out"
Another user on X called the film 'fanfiction' and 'pure nonsense,' calling it out for not being biblical. He wrote:
"That new "Mary" movie on Netflix is nothing but fanfiction BS that Joel Osteen cooked up with his greedy little fingers. Damn near nothing biblical about it; just pure nonsense."
Many viewers are recommending people online not to watch the film. One user on X wrote,
This is not the first time the Netflix project has faced backlash online. Earlier, the film was criticized for casting Israeli actors Noa Cohen and Ido Tako in the role of Mary and Joseph, respectively.
D. J. Caruso defended the casting choice through an interview with Entertainment Weekly where he said,
“It was important to us that Mary, along with most of our primary cast, be selected from Israel to ensure authenticity."
One user on X called the casting of an Israeli actress to play the mother of Jesus a political statement that trivializes sacred beliefs:
"It's utterly disrespectful to portray religious figures in such a trivialized manner, especially when it’s done for profit or entertainment. The casting of an Israeli actress to play Mary, the mother of Jesus, is not just a casting choice—it's a clear political statement that trivializes sacred beliefs. Christians worldwide hold Mary in reverence, and to commercialize her image like this is nothing short of sacrilege."
