While Avengers: Doomsday remains heavily anticipated by fans, the most recent news regarding the film has many up in arms about it. Set to be the first mainline Avengers film since Avengers: Endgame, the movie will be the first huge ensemble of its kind since 2019. Slated to hit theatres in May 2026, it looks like Captain America actor Chris Evans will be making his return to Marvel Cinematic Universe then as well.

First reported by The Wrap, Avengers: Doomsday is all set to star Chris Evans. However, it is unclear as of now whether he will be playing Captain America or any other character in the upcoming films. Fans got to see Evans last play Marvel's man in blue and red in Avengers: Endgame, and Evans also returned to the Marvel Cinematic Universe to play the Human Torch in Deadpool & Wolverine.

However, fans aren't exactly thrilled to see Chris Evans return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Avengers: Doomsday. Rather, many have had a very mixed reaction to his casting in the film. Many criticized Marvel Studios for being out of ideas and even said that Evans' sendoff in Avengers: Endgame is meaningless now.

"The MCU bringing back chris evans & robert downey jr is honestly so comic accurate. they're scared of trying anything new so they're just bringing back the old guard," said one fan on X.
"As someone who loves Endgame, this is so disheartening. we couldn't even get *one* avengers movie before they started bringing everyone back," said another fan.
"They couldn’t make one avengers movie without the original cast, man lmao," said another fan.

Other fans also took issue with how Avengers: Doomsday is putting more significance on nostalgia and fan service rather than delivering a diverse plot of its own.

"I’m tired of this bulls**t. I just wanna movie about dooms origins done correctly & the setup that establishes the foundation for secret wars not a bunch of fan service cameos," said a fan on X.
"This movie is going to have more cameos and nostalgia bait than an actual good storyline," said another fan.
"I went to see avengers endgame four times for NOTHING give me my f*****g refund," said a fan on X.

Robert Downey Jr. is also returning in Avengers: Doomsday

However, it isn't only Chris Evans from the Marvel Cinematic Universe's old guard that's returning for Avengers: Endgame, but rather actor Robert Downey Jr. is too. Robert Downey Jr. is best known for portraying Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and this time he will be portraying the famous supervillain known as Doctor Doom from the comics.

However, Downey Jr.'s casting in Avengers: Doomsday was met with a largely mixed response too as fans said that his return feels like nostalgia-bait. Many fans also complained about how the film is whitewashing the character of Doctor Doom who is famous for Romani descent in the comics and has his culture be extremely important to his origins as well.

While the plot wraps on Avengers: Doomsday remains unknown as of now, the film is being directed by Anthony and Joe Russo who previously helmed Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame as well. The film is currently scheduled to release in theatres on May 1, 2026.
