Following years of rumors and speculations, Thunderbolts* has been officially confirmed. The movie marks the first-ever villain team-up movie from the MCU.
Long-time Marvel fans have been speculating that something of this kind is brewing, especially during the MCU Phase 4. Finally, the movie was announced officially in July 2022 where even some of the Thunderbolts* cast members were confirmed by Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige.
Several MCU actors will be making their return for Thunderbolts* which will act as a sequel to projects such as The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Black Widow, Ant-Man and the Wasp, and Captain America: New World Order. Bringing together several antiheroes and reformed villains from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Thunderbolts* puts a darker spin on an Avengers-style superhero team.
Confirmed cast and character guide for Thunderbolts*
1. Sebastian Stan as The Winter Soldier
Sebastian Stan debuted as Bucky Barnes in 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger, as the childhood friend of Steve Rogers, who fought alongside Captain America. After Bucky apparently fell to his death, he was taken captive by Hydra and turned into the Winter Soldier - a super soldier and lethal assassin. He eventually broke free from this conditioning after the events of Captain America: Civil War.
Bucky was then dubbed the "White Wolf" by the people of Wakanda, who helped him rehabilitate and he has also helped Sam Wilson transition into the MCU's new Captain America. Sebastian Stan will return to essay his role as Bucky, the Winter Soldier in MCU's Thunderbolts*.
2. Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, the Black Widow
During the events of Black Widow, Natasha Romanoff reunited with her surrogate family, including her sister, Yelena Belova. Both sisters were trained in the Red Room to be Black Widow assassins. While Romanoff joined SHIELD, Yelena joined General Dreykov.
Yelena was freed in Black Widow and she helped bring down the Red Room. But since then, she had submitted to Valentina, who sent her to kill Clint Barton during Hawkeye. Yelena is portrayed by Florence Pugh, who will return to her character for the upcoming MCU movie.
3. Wyatt Russell as John Walker, or the US Agent
Wyatt Russell made his Marvel debut as John Walker, the man who assumed the Captain America moniker in the wake of Steve Rogers' retirement in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
Walker is infamous for his temper, ego, and pride, which led to him becoming a twisted version of the patriotic hero. He was thus fired from this coveted position, and Valentina recruited him and transformed him into a US Agent. With the super-soldier serum in his veins, he is the latest addition to the movie.
4. David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov, the Red Guardian
Another Black Widow character who is returning for Thunderbolts* is Yelena Belova's father figure, Alexei. David Harbour debuted as the Russian supersoldier Alexei Shostakov in the MCU's Phase 4. He was given a version of the super-soldier serum during the Cold War and he fought in the Soviet military for years.
After he was incarcerated by his ally General Dreykov, Alexei exacted revenge by helping his daughters eliminate the Red Room in Black Widow. Also known as the Red Guardian, Alexei Shostakov is one of three super soldiers on the Thunderbolts team.
