Time Cut is an American science fiction thriller film released on Netflix on October 30, 2024. The movie is directed by Hannah MacPherson, and it is based on a screenplay she co-wrote with Michael Kennedy. A production of ACE Entertainment, Time Cut's primary cast involves American singer and actress Madison Bailey, followed by Antonia Gentry, Griffin Gluck, and Megan Best.
The movie's story revolves around a high school science enthusiast who stumbles upon a time machine in an abandoned garage on the day of her sister's death anniversary. Accidentally, Lucy was transported 20 years ago, on April 16, 2003, two days before her sister Summer was killed by a serial killer. Upon realizing she has received a chance, Lucy embarks on a journey to save her sister from the Sweetly Slasher.
At the end of Time Cut, Lucy saves her sister from the Sweetly Slasher. But in turn, she creates a ripple effect, which alters her future timeline. Her parents never had a plan for another child, and after Summer survives, it wipes up Lucy's entire existence.
After Lucy reaches back to 2024, she finds out that her parents don't recognize her because she was never born. Hence, she decides to return to the past and create a new future of her own, this time with her sister Summer.
What is the ultimate tragedy of Lucy's life in Time Cut?
At the beginning of Time Cut, viewers are introduced to Lucy, who has always lived under the shadow of her dead sister. Even after twenty years, her parents haven't been able to recover from the death of their first child. The town of Sweetly is still haunted by the series of deaths committed by a serial killer who came to be known as the Sweetly Slasher.
Lucy is a bright student with a deep passion for science and research. Her teacher, Mr. Flemming, encourages her to work toward her future dreams. She even managed to land a Summer Internship at NASA for that year, but her parents denied the proposal. His father, Gil, proposes she work at his father's research station (SONR) instead.
The film shows that her parents are afraid to lose their second daughter and are too protective to let her go anywhere. Throughout her life, Lucy's ultimate tragedy has been that her parents never recognized her as having a separate identity. She gets tired of living under her dead sister's name and mourning her absence, even if she had never met her.
This all changes when she stumbles upon the time machine. Coincidentally, she is transported to the exact time before the Sweetley Killer murders, getting an opportunity to witness it and do something to change her destiny.
How Lucy and Summer's fates are interconnected to each other in Time Cut?
After Lucy time travels back to 2003, she realizes that her sister Summer was a popular girl in high school. She had Emmy, Val, and Brian as her closest friends. Lucy observes that Summer had recently come out of a toxic relationship with Ethan, who is still trying to follow her.
When Lucy visits her home with Summer, she realizes that her parents are nothing like she had known them her entire life. They were much more jolly, more open in their nature, and the gloom still hadn't touched their faces. In a conversation with her parents from the past, Lucy asks if they ever considered having a second child. They replied that they were very content with just having Summer.
This made her realize that she was born to cope with the death of her elder sister, Summer. Hence, their destinies are interlinked with each other. Summer's absence led to Lucy's existence; if she prevented it, she wouldn't exist in the future. Lucy's new friend Quinn, whom young Mr. Fleming introduces as a science genius, knew that altering the past could create a paradox or even multiple paradoxes. This was the main reason Quinn tried to prevent Lucy from stopping the deaths.
What is the true identity of the serial killer in Time Cut?
At the movie's beginning, most of the suspicion behind the Sweetley Slasher's true identity is directed at Ethan. Observing his behavior and history with Summer, he was showing all the signs of being a serial killer. But as the story of Time Cut unfolds, the audience realizes there is more to this sci-fi thriller.
The Sweetley Slasher is very closely connected to the Time Machine, and he was the one who built it in the first place. After Quinn and Summer manage to crash the killer in the Hayshed before he manages to kill Summer, he wakes up wounded and reveals his true identity. The Sweetley Slahser is actually Quinn himself from the future.
He revealed that he was tired of the constant bullying. He had lived under laughter and mockery from other people all his life. The riverside incident was one of the most crucial times when he decided to change his destiny. In his timeline, there was no Lucy to save her, and the bullies threw him into the river, though he didn't know swimming. Everyone laughed at him, including Summer, too.
The future Quinn always had feelings for Summer, which is very visible when he does all of her homework. But she never acknowledged and even rejected his treasured love letter, saying she could never love him like that. This was why Quinn delved deep into research and managed to create a Time Machine.
He came back in the same year, intending to kill Summer and take revenge on his bullies. This is why the police never found him in the first place. But Lucy finds the Time Machine and follows his trial back to the past, which changes his plan completely. Lucy fought off Quinn's bullies, preventing the river accident. She showed genuine warmth and kindness to the young Quinn, which he never received from anyone.
In the movie's very last scene, after killing Sweetley Slasher, Lucy decides to return from her alternate future and create a new one of her own. She got her sister back and Quinn as a close friend. This symbolizes that this version of Quinn will never grow up with the same pain and will create a future without Sweetley Slasher.
