What will A Complete Unknown be about?
The film will not deal with the general biography of Bob Dylan. Rather, it will focus on one particular episode of his life that had strong implications for the world of music in general.
Around 1965, Dylan started incorporating electrically amplified instrumentation in his music. His first concert with electric instruments occurred on July 25, 1965, at the Newport Folk Festival. As a folk musician, Dylan’s adoption of electrical instruments proved controversial, but led to the emergence of what's now called folk rock.
A Complete Unknown will portray this experimental episode in Dylan’s life. In an interview given to Rolling Stone on July 24, 2024, director James Mangold confirmed that the biopic would cover the timespan starting from Dylan’s arrival in New York in January, 1961, to “72 hours after the (Newport Folk Festival) concert in ’65.”
In the teaser released by Searchlight Pictures, the arrival of an unknown and poor Dylan in New York in 1961 is shown as he keeps strumming a guitar and performing a song to a live audience. A Complete Unknown will portray how the unknown singer ended up becoming a musical icon within a few years.
