The Flash director Andy Muschietti has enraged netizens online with his latest comments about the DC film's poor box office performance. Released in 2023, the Ezra Miller-starrer, which carried an estimated budget of $200 million, only grossed over $270 million worldwide, making it one of the biggest box office duds in DC and Warner Bros' cinematic history.
Talking to Radio Tu’s “La Baulera del Coso” show about The Flash's box office performance on January 8, 2025, Andy Muschietti said that the film failed to appeal to the "four quadrants" and that the people didn't generally care about the DC character as a whole. He singled out the two "female quadrants" for not particularly being interested in the character, and how the movie failed because it didn't appeal to them.
This led to the director receiving massive backlash online from fans. With The Flash facing a troublesome development alongside Ezra Miller's various controversies, the film carried significant bad faith going into its release. Many fans pointed that out while also mentioning how Muschietti blaming women is "ridiculous." They also highlighted the highly successful TV show based on the character.
"Someone unplug Andy's mic. There are numerous reasons why the film failed, but to blame women is just ridiculous," said a fan on X.
"Andy Muschiettis comments about women aside, no filmmaker should be attached to a project if they genuinely don't believe people lack the ability to care for that character. If there was a character that absolutely no one could resonate with then no movies would be made ever," shared another fan.
"Does he thunk we gonna forget the Ezra controversy? Doesn’t help that you purposely made it look bad," exclaimed another fan.
"Does he know about the very popular and successful TV show that ran for almost a decade," opined another fan.
With Muschietti having directed The Flash, he is set to direct Batman: The Brave and the Bold for DC Studios. Many fans reacted to his comments, saying that he should be replaced by a different director. Here are some of the reactions:
"Muschietti's still claiming that women don't like superheroes in the big 2025 and I'm supposed to believe he's the best choice to direct a Batman movie," said another fan.
"The dude is so deep into the studio game that he’s out here using their shareholder talking points as an excuse to why he made a bad movie," opined another fan.
The Flash director to direct Batman: The Brave and the Bold
Prior to The Flash's release in June 2023, DC Studios president James Gunn had confirmed that director Andy Muschietti would be helming Batman: The Brave and the Bold. The film is set to focus on Batman and Damian Wayne's Robin and will be borrowing elements from writer Grant Morrison's take on Batman. However, not much is known about the film as of now.
It will be set in James Gunn's brand new DCU and separate from Matt Reeves' The Batman. It will feature a new actor in the role of the Caped Crusader. Currently, a release date for the film isn't available following its reveal in January 2023.
