Transformers: One is set to hit theatres soon on September 20, 2024, and it will be taking us to Cybertron to tell the origins of Optimus Prime and Megatron. The film, which will be fully animated and a prequel taking place 3 billion years in past, will focus on the story of how Optimus and Megatron came to be sworn enemies after being friends for many years.
Transformers: One will highlight the friendship between Optimus and Megatron, and more importantly, will focus on how the latter character became his evil self as well. Megatron's past has always been a bit mysterious as the character was conceived as a generic cartoon villain, however, depth has been added to him over the last few years.
In the series, Megatron is the leader of the Decepticons and leads an army of his own that believes peace can only be achieved through tyranny. While the Transformers films and animated shows try adding depth to the character's past, it was actually the Transformers comics published by IDW that fully delved into how he became the evil and the leader of Decepticons.
While he wasn't always evil, it was circumstances on Cybertron that led him to form the Decepticons and eventually have his heel turn.
IDW Transformers comics portray a tragic backstory for Megatron
In the 2007 IDW Transformers comics, fans were able to get a peep into Megatron's backstory. In the book, he was portrayed as a lowly miner who had delusions of grandeur, due to Cybertron's strict caste system, he was forced not to act upon his dreams. As time goes by, Megatron's hate for Cybertron's council grows further, and he decides to take matters into his own hands.
In defiance of the planet's corrupt senate, he started writing political treatises which became quite popular. It also caught the senate's eyes who decided to put a hit out on him, however, he was saved by Orion Pax - Optimus Prime - in the process. However, when he learned that the senate had put out a hit on him, Megatron then sought to use violence rather than peace to achieve his goals.
Fighting in gladiators, Megatron further made a name for himself and then amassed an army of criminals who joined him in his movement as well. Becoming the Decepticons, as they were deceived, an all-out war in Cybertron began and thus they became the sworn enemies of Autobots.
