The standalone sequel to Tron: Legacy, Tron: Ares is the third film in the franchise and is set to release on October 10, 2025. Directed by Joachim Rønning, with a screenplay by Jesse Wigutow and Jack Thorne, the film has been in development since October 2010, when the franchise's creator, Steven Lisenberger, first announced it. Over the years, the film has gone through several changes, including cast, director, scripts, and more.

At one point the film even got canceled by Disney, and the reason was nothing but Tomorrowland’s poor box office performance. However, Tron: Ares was revived after multiple crew members and even the lead star assured the audience that the project was moving forward, reigniting hope for those fans who eagerly awaited to see the next chapter in the Tron saga.

Tron: Ares will be released on October 10, 2025

Tron: Ares is set to be released theatrically on October 10, 2025. The film is expected to have a special IMAX release, offering an immersive experience for fans. As of now, there is no trailer for the film. However, to keep the enthusiasm alive, a first look of a Tron character in the iconic Tachyon suit was released.

Prior to the film’s release, it has been announced that Cleaveland’s popular rock band, Nine Inch Nails, will be composing the official score. It was revealed that Atticus Ross and Trent Reznor were the ones from the band working on the score, but instead of composing the track under their name, the duo decided to go with the name of their band.

Tron: Ares was filmed in Vancouver starting August 14, 2023. Like many other projects, the production was stopped due to the ongoing 2023 Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes. The filming resumed in January 2024 and later wrapped up on May 1.

What is Tron: Ares all about?

Here’s the official logline for Tron: Ares:

“TRON: Ares” follows a highly sophisticated Program, Ares, who is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission, marking humankind’s first encounter with A.I. beings.

Based on the synopsis, it is pretty much clear that Tron: Ares is all set to introduce a new chapter in the TRON universe, following Ares (played by Jared Leto), an advanced and brilliant program.

Ares emerges from the digital world into the physical realm, only to get tasked with an impossible mission, becoming the first A.I. being to make contact with humanity, throwing both worlds into chaos.

Being an A.I., Ares will undoubtedly navigate the complexities of human society, which will make it clear to him that his mission is more than just survival, something on which the fate of both the real world and the digital world is dependent.

Following a common trope, the movie will explore the lines between man and machine blurring, where the protagonist must do anything necessary to protect both worlds. Bestowed with great responsibility, Ares must grapple with his identity, free will, and power to prevent the collapse of both realities.
