Untamed Royals is a Mexican crime drama film that premiered on August 28, 2024, on Netflix. The movie deals with all kinds of social failures through a story about a bunch of eccentric and spoiled rich teenagers. The film keeps the viewers hooked due to the consistent increase in the madness and degeneration of its characters, which also reflects society.

The official synopsis on Netflix reads:

"A group of wealthy teenagers commit crimes that escalate from petty mischief to dangerous plots, causing chaotic consequences — but not for themselves."

The film ends with a chilling scene where the three criminals, Xavier, Mariane, and Gerardo, casually watch TV after killing a young boy named Vincente. They kidnapped and drugged him for ransom, but he overdosed. The film explores themes of greed, class divide, and parental neglect, wrapped in a compelling story of teenage criminality.

The film starts with a violent fake robbery and ends with child murder. In-between there's kidnapping, gambling, hit and run, police brutality, and murder. The sinister tale of the best friends and partner in crime, Xavi and Gerardo, begins with a plan to rob Xavi's house, which they successfully execute due to Xavi's brilliant performance, including getting shot in the belly.

They mislead the police towards the family’s former driver, Leopoldo. Realizing how easily they can fool the cops, they stage a fake kidnapping of Xavi’s influencer girlfriend, Renata, and extort 2 million pesos from her mother.

Xavier later confesses to Renata about the fake kidnapping, which initially disgusts her. However, after finding out from Mariana (Xavier's sister and her friend) that her mother paid less money than asked despite knowing that she was in real danger, she joined the gang in their criminal endeavor.

To start a new life away from her mother and stepfather, Renata plans to kidnap her little brother Vincente to extort more money from them. She thinks that they would pay much more for their son. Unfortunately, things go south and Vincente dies of an overdose from the pills that they used to drug him.

Was justice served by the end of Untamed Royals?

Untamed Royals showcases how easy it is for the rich to get away with anything. The teenagers did not bear any consequences even after committing multiple violent and heinous crimes. Mariane stole her father's expensive watch, but the family's driver Leopold was accused of it and lost his job.

The house staff of Xavier's family, Mari, is physically assaulted during the fake robbery. While the boys were having fun, she was terrified that she'd get rap*ed and killed. The investigators apprehended Leopold for the suspected robbery, tortured him for days, and ultimately killed him.

After Vincente's body was found near a drainage, the police concluded that Paty, his nanny and housemaid, who was also romantically involved with Leopold, was the culprit behind the little boy's kidnapping and murder. The failure of the justice system is showcased in a heartbreaking shot where a cop accuses Paty, and she helplessly sobs, knowing well that she won't be able to prove herself innocent.

Adults are the real culprit in Untamed Royals

On the surface, Untamed Royals seems like a crazy story about a bunch of teenage brats abusing their power and privilege and committing crimes. But the film is more complex than that. The teenagers are not the real culprits in the film, the adults are. The parents are neglecting, self-centered, and greedy. Their children are a product of their conduct.

The investigators too facilitate the teenagers in their crimes after realizing that they too can make a profit out of it. In the end, prime investigator Rodrigo even covertly hints to Gerardo that he'll help cover his crimes in the future in exchange for money. The teenagers, who seem sinister and evil, are just a bunch of depressed kids, but the adults are truly corrupt in every sense of the word.

Untamed Royals is available for streaming on Netflix.
